Used to go in here a lot a few years ago and I love some of the old school boozers in the Northern Quarter, where you can still get a pint for £2.50! A friend and I were looking for somewhere city centre based, where we could buy a Sunday roast for around £8. The Crown’s deal is £7.95 for one course or £9.95 for two courses — bingo! The interior has changed quite a bit from when I was last in here and from the outside you would expect a homely, Old England-style classic pub, but I was disappointed to find another case of gastro-itus here. I hate all this gastro-style modernisation that seems to be sweeping through J.W.Lees, Joseph Holt’s and various other Brewery owned pubs at the moment. I like the feel of carpeted floors and soft furnishings, thank you! Saying that, it was cheap as chips for drinks and food. The food menu is really varied with hangover-banishing pub grub(tikka missala, fish and chips, homemade lasagne) and nothing is more than £8, most being £6.50. The clientele was varied with no hipsters. The Sunday roast(I got beef which was cooked to perfection) was quite simply, the best I’d had in years. This is my new local and I will be in here every week from now on!
