Crazy Wendy’s

So disappointed with my night at Crazy Wendy’s, this place has gone really down since my last visit. I know the food has never been the main focus here but I did expect something half edible. The banquet wasn’t good at all. The starters were all deep fried and piled on top of each other like a tower of heart attack inducing horror. To make matters worse the wontons tasted exactly like the spring rolls, not that there was that much taste really. Just when we thought it couldn’t get any worse the mains arrived. My thai red curry was like water and the meat in the massaman curry was slimy.
Well, we thought things could only get better after that and eagerly awaited the arrival of Crazy Wendy who was due to appear at 9.30pm. She didn’t actually arrive until 11pm. We asked several waiters why she was taking so long and they couldn’t provide an adequate answer. When she did appear her performance was lack lustre and had none of the sparkle I had witnessed on my last visit.
We were out of there not long after and headed across the road to salvage the night at Volta. The only reason I have given this 2 stars was because the waiting staff were so pleasant and the drinks incredibly cheap at £2.95 for a spirit.

Don’t go if you want top class food however couldn’t fault the atmosphere. Big groups are always welcome and basically anything goes!

Are you worried that this place is owned by an Elvis-​obsessed lady dressed like Shirley Bassey called Crazy Wendy? That the website plays ‘Suspicious Minds’ on a continuous repeat, whether you’re on the menu page or the contact details? You shouldn’t be. Unless you don’t want to participate in the karaōke. Then, be afraid. Be very afraid.
The food is great with classic Thai dishes, tons of vegetarian options and delicious desserts like fried ice cream and banana fritters, but it’s not the focus here. It’s the spectacle. For the full experience you want to go on a night when Wendy’s singing live, which would be Thursday, Friday or Saturday night, with Sunday hosting the much-​loved buffet. There’s also a takeaway service every day in case you’re not quite up for the sing-​song but if you want a meal out with a difference, this is the place to be.
It’s not often you find a restaurant where the place itself plays second fiddle to the host or hostess, but this is one of those rarities. Wendy’s a legend in Didsbury, not to mention a very nice lady. Something I’d hugely recommend it for is a stag or hen party as the booze flows, everyone acts silly and the atmosphere is jovial. What more could you ask for? In a leafy quiet suburb, this place stands out by miles.

If you’re looking for more of a knees up than a night of culinary excellence, the Crazy Wendy’s (formerly Thai E-​Sarn Classic) might just be the place. The food is loosely representative of Thai cuisine, but that’s ok for most people who come here on a Friday and Saturday night specifically to see Crazy Wendy, the restaurant’s proprietor.
A unique dining experience is certainly what we got here. After our main course, out comes Wendy in full regalia: boa, tiara, sequined dress, to belt out (badly) her renditions of Elvis Presley, Tom Jones & Shirley Bassey hits. Before long, she had us all singing in a communal karaōke session, with diners taking to the tables and chairs. Yes, it’s tacky, yes it’s gimmicky but pretty funny to watch.

The is supposedly one of the best Thai restaurants in Manchester. It puts on a fair bit of entertainment and is always quite full.
I got a takeaway from here and I’m not sure if something was lost by not eating in the restaurant but I didn’t find it amazing. Don’t get me wrong, it was nice food but not was good as I was expecting. I found the green curry a little watery and not as spicy as I’m used to.
