As good as it gets in Manchester. Which, if you’re reading this means you already understand that Manchester’s food scene is still so far back in its infancy that you need to check whether a fish and chip restaurant is capable of cooking fish and chips. Best in Manchester, and would compete with some top places in Leeds(which is the capital of the dish IMO).

A proper fish and chip shop, of which I have not found an alternative for a proper jumbo sausage or chip-shop chips. Brilliant service and usually not too busy since its off the beaten track of Oxford Road. Prices are brilliant and its your usual sort of chip shop with the aroma brilliant anytime you walk past.

Before Christmas I visited The Cod Father, and I only gave it 2 stars because it wasn’t very tasty and was very stodgy. In January I visited The Battered Cod to see if there was a decent chippie in town, and thank goodness there is. The Battered Cod isn’t the best chippie in the world, but it is a very decent one and it sells decent fish and chips at a decent price with decent service. I didn’t have to wait long despite the place being busy, the batter was tasty if not crispy and the chips were very tasty(and not too salty, despite my fears). The food wasn’t even stodgy as I expected. At lunchtimes you can get a healthy but not huge portion(actually, a very healthy and nearly huge portion) for £4 with a couple of side orders, at other times it’s just under £5 for a cod and chips, hardly bank-breaking stuff. Is it amazing? No. Is it enjoyable? Yes. Is it good value for money? Yes. Crucially, will I go again? Absolutely.

Total fish and chip chippiness all over your greasy little face. Absolute bog standard decent fish and chips right in the heart of Fallowfield you lucky little students you. Portions are generous, the peas are properly mushy and the chips are the perfect balance between soggy and crunchy(this is a good thing BTW, for any Americans who may be reading). Great cod and haddock, good chips, some standard chipshop pies, sausages and sides like peas, gravy and curry sauce. There is your usual selection of chilled carbonated beverages, including — to my delight — a decent ginger beer. Excellent.

Thought I’d try the one near me in Fallowfield. Having read the reviews on here, I can now see why it scores highly. The service in there was excellent. The place was busy and they had plenty of staff on hand so I didn’t have to wait longer than 30 seconds to get served. I opted for a large portion of fish and chips. WOW. It could feed a few! As for the most important part. the taste. it’s delicious! best I’ve had in ages. For a fiver for the amount you get and the quality its definitely worth a trip. I shall be back!

Ah! The sneaky hidden away Battered Cod that’s not the one in Withington. Basically, it is the same as the other The Battered Cod but smaller. However, it is just as great and greasy. It really is something of an institution and the women cackle while the fish is fried in front of you… and, most importantly, the portions are huge. You’ll not go hungry if you pop into the Battered Cod. Like its younger sibling in Withington, The Battered Cod is a proper chippy of which there are depressingly few in Manchester. Thankfully, this one isn’t the king because it is the lone shooter… if someone else opened a proper chipper nearby, they’d have to match the grub of this wonderful little place. Fantastic.

Battered Cod; an unremarkable, distinctly average fish and chip shop in Fallowfield with an unoriginal but non-the-less mildly amusing name. People always rant and rave about this place like it is the best fish and chip shop in the world. It’s not; it’s just the only one in Fallowfield. People seem to forget that fish and chips is brilliant anyway, and just because this place serves fish and chips does not mean it is brilliant. It’s incredibly mediocre. I want to slap it in the face and tell it to stop resting on it’s laurels. It’s not even cheap, you end up paying nearly 6 quid for a cod and chips, average fish and chips where the fish is invariably luke-warm, a little soggy. Don’t expect anything special.

Best fish and chip takeaway in Manchester. Got to be! The batter isn’t too greasy, the fish tastes fresh and the chips are crispy on the outside, soft on the inside. Perfect. It’s a proper chippy and worth the walk if you don’t live directly next to it. The portions are large but hey if you make the decision to have fish and chips, go all out — don’t do it by halves. They also have all the standard fizzy drinks so grab a Dr Pepper and one of those little wooden forks and you’re good to go.

Apparently in the run up to the 1992 American presidential elections Bill Clinton had a sign in his campaign office that read«it’s the economy, stupid» maybe there’s a similar note behind the counter at the battered cod(maybe it’s written on one of those day-glo ‘special offer’ stars like the ones stuck to the wall) that reads«it’s the fish, stupid.» Rather than attempting to push burgers or pizzas or fried chicken The Battered Cod specialises in tried and tested chip shop staples; pies, fish cakes, sausages and of course, as the name of suggests, fish and chips. The chips here are good, very good in fact(striking just the right balance between fluffy and crisp) but it’s the fish that really hits the mark. Beneath thin crackling batter is piping hot, juicy white fish which slides apart at the end of your fork or if you can’t make it to the kitchen, or even to the end of the street, between your greasy salty fingers. Admittedly my positive view of the food on offer might have been exaggerated by the circumstances under which I last enjoyed a meal from here(it having been my first since accidentally starving myself whilst finishing my dissertation). I can promise though that if you are looking for fish and chips in Fallowfield you will not do any better than here.

The Battered Cod is a real Fallowfield institution, having been there even before the area became student central. Indeed, one of my first memories is going there with my Dad back in 1984(when I was two) and sitting on their countertop swinging my legs whilst the friendly chap behind the fryer served us up our cod and chips. I went back there a few weeks ago, and was pleased to see that it was still serving up truly tremendous portions of fish and chips. All of the fish is fresh, and fried there right in front of you, and the portions are immense — certainly enough to satisfy any appetite, no matter how greedy the person is! It’s all very reasonably priced as well, making it the perfect end of week treat for both students and locals alike. Whilst it’s not the kind of thing I’d eat every day, it’s nice to see The Battered Cod still serving up quality cheap eats. Indeed, I doubt you’ll find a better chippy in any other student-y area in South Manchester!

It is my firm belief that you should never be further than a couple of miles from a fish and chip shop, and I now luckily have one within five minutes from me. There are others nearby, but I see no reason to pick them over this gem. It is a little bit hidden, being situated as it is slightly off the beaten track of Wilmslow Road, but well worth a visit if you happen to be passing. Let me get this straight: there are very few things a fish and chip shop needs to do to satisfy me. One is be quick, another is to taste good, and the third is to be cheap. An easy victory for the Cod then. It doesn’t hurt that the staff are friendly and seemingly almost all female. Oh, and they do a good steak and kidney pie. What else do you need to know?

There are a serious lack of decent chip shops in Rusholme/Fallowfield! Fortunately, The Battered Cod is there to fill that gap. Thinking about this chippie fills me with pangs of regret for ever having left university. Ouch.

Seriously, this place is just great! I discovered this place during my first year of University and I’ve never looked back. I have to admit, I am heartened to note I have a Battered Cod even closer to me now in Withington, but the Battered Cod in Fallowfield will always be close to my heart. Every time I have been there, the staff have always been very happy and polite, which is a really nice quality to see. The food is always great — the portions of fish are huge, and although it cost the best part of a tenner for 2 large fish and chip meals and some cokes, it’s less than I normally spend on a takeaway and I can never finish the meal as there’s so much food. The service at the Battered Cod has always been great and quick, the food tastes as it should and it is better than its competitors. Two very enthusiastic thumbs up here; it’s good for a secret deep-fried treat once in a while.

I had fish and chips from here last night and was SO nice. It was also cheap I thought £2.30 for fish and £1.10 for the chips. I thought this was very reasonable. The staff were nice and we got served straight away. It just looks like your average chip shop really. clean and plenty of flyers you can look through while you’re waiting. There is plenty of places to park outside. Mmmm I’d love to go back right now! haha. best not.
