Saris! Being Indian and loving saris is one of them! You of course don’t wear it often or anything, but just wearing it on an Asian event and looking that beautifully different makes everything worthwhile. And not to be biased, but I have seen British women wear traditional clothes including saris and I have to say that everyone looks beautiful and elegant and sexy in it! It’s a one piece cloth flowing well for meters and when wrapped around you, can transform you wonderfully! Coming back to Alankar, it has a great display of a large collection and mostly houses the very heavy wedding kinds. It’s full of shine and bright colours which catches every eye passing by and makes them look in wonder or want. There are many aspects of design like the sequences and the thread-work, differentiating it well. It has a really friendly atmosphere and they’re very helpful to people who are not familiar with the traditions that follow it.

The best thing about Rusholme is the way it is a little microcosm of Asian culture, offering shops and services you don’t find elsewhere in Manchester. Alankar House of Saris could only really exist here, but I’m glad it does. Not because I wear saris, but because its actual a beautiful place to look around, as opposed to, say, a meat market.
There’s a massive array of saris on display, in all the bright colours that are so often missing from modern Britain, and it strangely seems to spread across multiple shops throughout the curry mile. Even if you don’t actually want to buy a sari, it’s good to just look around.

Alankar I’ve been in because it’s interesting, my knowledge of it is poor though so don’t take this reviews as god’s word. I ended up in here with a female friend who found the gear i.e. saris and such very pretty. Lots of browsing revealed a big shop floor with all manner of traditional eastern dress, and the brightest fabrics etc ever known. The place is friendly and the atmosphere modern. Errm yeh.
