Lowestoft in the spring is a bit dead, so we were lucky to find the Fortune Cookie Restaurant open, just around the corner from our B&B. Inside, the décor is very 90s, with black high back chairs and glass tables. Although it’s a medium sized establishment, like any proper Chinese restuarant, it came complete with a fish tank. This family run restaurant has Dad playing host. He was happy to chat with us, and we had a really interesting conversation about his life and what brought him to the UK. The waitress, a local blonde lass in a mandarin-collared embroidered top, also came by for a chat while we were waiting for our food, and was happy to tell us more about Lowestoft. There’s a very affordable buffet menu on offer, but we went a la carte. We ordered the prawn toast and spicy squid starters — both were tasty and generous-sized portions. For mains, we had the chicken in black bean sauce and chicken with cashew nuts along with fried rice. The food was surprisingly fresh and is the kind of thing that just hits the spot. For a starter, main and two drinks each, it came to 32 quid. We were happy to leave a generous tip for such friendly and kind service.
