Well, it’s a Waitrose.
That’s not so bad, honestly, it has everything you could near. We were making latkes for Hanukkah and had to get sour cream, potatoes, apple sauce and Prosecco (just because) and it had all of them, and in multiple different kinds. And for reference, the Tesco nearby had no apple sauce, so Waitrose 1, Tesco 0.
It’s overpriced, yes, and the staff can be rude, but it will have what you need and that’s sometimes all you need from a grocery store.

Excellent express grocery store. Found more diversity than I expected due to its size. Many options of frozen ready meals and fruits. They even had natural and fresh papayas.

It’s Waitrose so I am happy. have been experimenting with this as a new Saturday shop venue. Pluses its empty, lots of staff, loads of lovely things, good deli Minuses tiny so poor range, stock levels hit and miss, mini butcher. There is a Tesco express next door for out of stock items but this too is tiny and hit and miss. So not a replacement for a Saturday shop back to Holloway next week but handy for a during the week top up.

On my walk home from work I have the glorious gift of not one, but two Waitroses en route. And while this Clerkenwell outpost doesn’t provide as robust an offering as the Angel location, for whatever reason, the fish counter here is always better stocked in both quality and quantity of fish.
Check my check-​ins — it’s not strange to see me check in to both locations: this one for my fish and the Angel location for everything else. Sure, my life may finally be complete if/​when a Trader Joe’s opens. Until that day, Waitrose is handily holding down the fort in the meantime.

Upon moving to a new city it’s important to watch for positive signs.
Here are a few that appeared for me today:
— Sweet potato falafel with houmous in a single serving container
— Madagascan vanilla yogurt
— Bombay Mix (a tasty snack composed of fried lentils, peanuts, chickpea flour noodles)
And all these signs turned up in the same place: the brand new branch of Waitrose in Clerkenwell! I wandered the aisles for far too long taking in all of the interesting offerings (and where the heck I am going to find tortilla chips because I couldn’t find any here.)
We all create a sense of place in different ways. For me it’s about finding a grocery store that «gets» me and Waitrose certainly does!

Oh lovely Waitrose. The closest M&S is a good 7 minutes walk away so I’m quite happy to have this opening up nearby.
The main thing I want to note is that it isn’t actually that popular. This has the brilliant effect of lots of near death date products being significantly reduced every single day? Fancy a bit of Foie Gras for £1? Pop in at lunch or at 5pm when all the reductions start happening. There’s some yummy food bargains to be had!

I have been willing a Waitrose to pop up in Clerkenwell with my psychic brainwaves since last year AND TODAY IT OPENED! Which proves two things:
1) My psychic powers work. (slowly)
2) You can now grocery shop in Clerkenwell at something larger than a Tesco Express without having to walk to Angel or Barbican!
The store is surprisingly big for the building it is in, and even has a fish counter along with all the Waitrose staples you’d expect like the market takeout, meats, ready-​to-​cooks and a fairly decent area for pantry items.
Those who know me know that I have a thing with «nice» grocery stores… So to finally have something worth going to in my little neighborhood… I’m in love…
