I won a pair of tickets to see ‘Britain’s Best Recruiting Sergeant’ from The Southwark Weekender(published by The Southwark News newspaper) for the Unicorn Theatre. I was pleased to get a Sunday booking so as not being late after work and I had a choice of dates. It was efficiently administered and the tickets were waiting for me at the box office as promised. It’s a fringe theatre(which I like) aimed at youngsters but I noticed some adult couples as well as me in the audience and the show I really enjoyed and the acting was very good. It’s a modern theatre without much character. The only reason I’m not giving four stars is because although I enjoyed the show, it was basically left-wing propaganda aimed at children. I get the idea about a young woman trying to recruit young men to go to their deaths in World War I(when she doesn’t put herself in the firing line). I probably wouldn’t want to join the army either. But to turn her in her later days as the knighted widow of a Conservative MP is propaganda. Most showbiz stars are socialists and Tony Blair, his greedy wife and Alastair Campbell sent more young men to their deaths in the Middle East than Thatcher ever did with the Falklands. I saw through the bullshit but enjoyed the old songs nonetheless

I was able to attend a series of lectures at the Unicorn Theatre and found it was one of the better venues in London. Let’s face it, there are only a few things needed for a professional location. You want good comfortable seating, a good sound system(rare these days it seems), internet access, a decent temperature, and a location that allows everyone room to stay comfortable and mingle easily. Yep, the Unicorn Theatre ticks all those boxes.
