I would strongly dispute one of the previous reviews, especially with regard to value for money. This is a pub in ‘green belt’ outer London and the previous reviewer was obviously used to prices in Huddersfield, which are hugely different. Where else in this area can you get a 2 very good quality 10oz gammon steaks for £9(March 2011 prices) While menu at the Fountain is cheaper, there is far more care in preparation and quality at The Oak — and unlike The Fountain there is little if any chance of the atmosphere turning nasty. The garden is usable(mainly by us smokers) most of the year thanks to the provision of patio heaters. Staff are now very friendly and helpful, especially since a rather grumpy one resigned. The real ale is limited to a couple of offerings, but they are well looked after.

Plus and minuses. Only real plus is the beer garden which is of course weather permitting. It is large enough for screaming kids to be running around without bothering you but how many times a year can you sit outside. Has needed a complete refurbishment for a very long time and considering the prices that are charged this is scandalous.

Excellent food, very friendly! The Pub Fountain at the fountain a mile away has the same menu, lower prices though!

The oak has a great, ‘proper pub’ atmosphere. Very chilled out, with a large beer garden in the back for the summer months. Very friendly staff and good local feel, the sort of place where you’ll run into your parents friends, but its ok!
