The name implies there will be a good selection of prints besides maps, but on a recent visit it seemed to be 90% maps. A great selection of maps, carefully organized by region and well marked with year, with some being quite reasonable in price for an affordable decoration ranging all the way to pricey pieces for more specific tastes. But not enough prints and engravings to justify the dual moniker.

I have Map Pox. A map shop in Edinburgh diagnosed me with it. Now whenever there is an antique map shop near by, I have to go in. There was a table of prints and maps outside, but I couldn’t get anywhere near it, so I popped inside. The store is quite small, so if you have a lot of bags from shopping, you could be asking for trouble… Besides the large maps, I found that there were more prints, rather than maps. They were lovely, but I wanted maps. Usually I spend a couple hours in a map shop, just browsing and sometimes the owner showing me maps that are similar to the things I like or help me discover new ones. I spent about 20 minutes in here and decided to head down the street.

The Portobello Print and Map Shop is part of the Portobello Antiques Market(though it exists as a standalone shop as well). It is a charming little shop that sells a range of antique prints, maps and engravings. There are maps of all around the world. There is a big range in prices from the tens to the thousands. I’ve always enjoyed looking about antique shops, and the prints they sell here are often interesting and beautiful in their own right. It is the sort of shop that makes me wish I were rich. However, there are lots of inexpensive prints for sale that make great presents. The people are friendly and ready to help with any questions.
