Nice pub, good atmosphere, surprisingly good pizza and generally nice to have around. It’s a pub, it’s not rocket science, but it’s not as crowded as the Bull or trying to be cool the way the Queens Head down the road is. It’s just a nice place for a drink and a chat, with a bit of buzz and plenty of seats(though I’m never there on a Friday night, so as other reviewers have noted, that might not always be true)!

I’ve been going to this pub now for about 2 yrs, both for food and nights out or at least the meeting point for a night out. Firstly as a place to go out it is a great venue. They play music that ain’t gonna deafen you but at the same time you can hear it. The crowd are mainly young(25 – 30) and I am yet to see any trouble in or outside which is a surely a good thing. The actual venue itself is hard to explain. The lighting is low and the pub has a bit of as rustic feel to it. Now for the eating part… the food it’s always brilliant never ever have I had a problem with it… the service on the other hand can be pretty crap. I went for a roast last week and ordered a scotch egg starter and roast pork main. I then with in about 5 seconds changed the starter to a chicken starter… the waiter/bar maid seemed to be more worried about anything else other than what I was saying… I then somehow ended up with a scotch egg starter and roast chicken main!!! Not happy. She then blamed me for changing my mind!!! Again not happy. Other than the service for food this place is a real awesome pub to chill out on a Sunday or start a Friday and Saturday night off. On a Tuesday night the pizzas are 2 for 1.

The New Rose has two entrances and the first one as you approach from Angel Tube takes you into what looks like a pretty small bar, but actually there is another even bigger area over the other side so fear not. Drinks range is excellent — for once I actually noticed that there is a wide range of ales on sale including local brews plus a fridge full of Brooklyn lager. There were THREE ciders on tap, including one traditional old cloudy one(although to be honest I eschewed this in favour of Aspalls). Food was also excellent, top notch pub grub with a very appealing menu on which everything was less than £10. Take note, pubs, this is the only acceptable price range for you, I don’t care if you have a Michelin star. If you want to upgrade, better invest in some tablecloths and, you know, a restaurant. I digress. I tried the scampi and scotch egg, both of which were great, and the sweet potato fries which could have been crispier but my table ordered I think 3 more dishes so clearly this wasn’t a major issue. I didn’t notice the music being great but nor did I notice it being annoying. It was loud but it was a Saturday night so fair enough. Oh! apparently some famous people came in… but I didn’t see them. Another of my classic anecdotes. All the card machines stopped working which was a bit annoying, although most people seemed to cope — there’s a cash machine right outside. At first I thought the bartenders seemed a bit hipster-snooty-ineffective, but actually they were all very good.

Used to be ok but now it seems the regulars have deserted this pub and the buzz it had is gone. Not surprising really the bar persons are just not that keen to serve you. It’s more like a social gathering for the staff who serve you when they feel like having a break from texting then charge you a high price with a miserable face. There are other pubs in the area who serve a good range of beer and don’t give you short measures then try to refuse your request to top it up. If the staff are too cool to serve me properly I’ll go elsewhere. Shame really as I did like the pub first off.

I really like this pub. One of the best in Angel it has a great selection of beers including some nice American craft types bottled. Red stripe on tap which pleases my friend. The food is good pub food, I opted for the fish and chips which was lovely. I’ve heard they do a great roast on Sundays also which I will have to check out. The crowd in here is friendly and not the overly pretentious types you find in some Angel establishments. Nore is it the wetherspoons/O’Neils crowd either. I don’t really want to use the word but it has a somewhat hipster feel to it. All I know is its a good pub!

Comme ci comme ca… whoops, wrong language. Having just hopped off the euro star from Paris(I can’t express how much I missed being in an English speaking city!) I stopped by for a drink waiting for a friend. The beer selection on tap is modest, with 4 mass market beers and 3 lesser known brews(I’m assuming the smaller brews rotate). Beers run about 3.5 pounds a pint. They play some pop music, but a bit too loud ’cause I was having a bit of a tough time carrying on a coherent conversation without yelling. The décor is a very traditional pub: wood, dark, small tables, candles and random stuff on the walls. Pretty much the status quo when you think«English pub», at least, for us North Americans. It was quite busy invasion Friday post work hours so I suppose there’s attraction here to the locals, but nothing special IMO. It’s just you’re average neighborhood bar, not that there’s anything wrong with that.

It is a pub. I don’t understand why certain places seem arbitrarily popular and I haven’t quite determined what makes this spot so. I went on a Friday night and it was extremely crowded. Sure, it is open late for a pub, but otherwise, I don’t get it. Nothing wrong with it, just not sure why it is so popular. Maybe if I came when it wasn’t so crowded I could see all the things that make it special that people are talking about. Again. It is a pub(ok, a NICE pub).

Crowded, rowdy, cozy. Really crowded, like spill half your pint trying to get from the bar back to your seat … if you can get a seat. Fantastic selection of 60s Brit rock. A 10-minute walk from Angel station, it was an excellent atmosphere for pints with friends on a cold December Saturday night. (My new year’s resolution is to write shorter reviews. I’m getting a head start.)

I can’t really fault The New Rose. Having been here at a bunch of different times, the thing I’ve noticed is they’ve managed to create a place that suits just about any kind of pub-going occasion. It seems to work just as well for a relaxed dinner during the week as it does for Saturday night out with mates or a Sunday arvo catch up. And yes, if you’re one who’s worried about how flattering the lighting is gonna be, you’ll be more than happy here. I’ve only eaten pizza here but can definitely recommend it. It’s not life-changing, but they’re slinging some nice pies out of that kitchen. They do 2 for 1 pizzas on Mondays which is definitely worth taking advantage of. We did actually go in for a Sunday roast once but they were sold out which indicates to me that they’re doing something right on that front. So yeah, defs recommended if you’re looking for a nice place to drink and maybe a cheap meal.

My local, I love it to pieces. I still haven’t quite recovered from losing the Warwick(now Barrio North), but the New Rose has helped a lot with the loss. Great pizza. Decent wine list. Friendly staff. Excellent Sunday roasts. Lots of room to sit. I personally love the décor. Since the pub has three different sort of defined areas, you can reserve an area and really feel like you have the place to yourself. Did I mention the comfy booths and fireplace in the winter?

I like the New Rose — it used to be my local — there is usually a mix of interesting folks. Good for: Football and 2−4−1 pizzas on Mondays. Not the usual Islington hang out, which is a good thing.

We came here for their two-for-one pizza deal and had quite an enjoyable evening. This pub is pretty comfy and I found the service to be great, and the clientele pleasant. The food was merely average, and somehow the pub atmosphere just didn’t blow me away. I’d come here again if I was in the area, but it’s not going to be my favourite watering hole.

The scope of these reviews is priceless! While I trust that a place like New Rose could easily fall anywhere in the 1 to 5 star range, last weekend I had a solid 4-star experience, whiling away a lazy Sunday afternoon and sipping on some strong draught cider. Arsenal was playing on two huge drop down screens, which again could have drastically swayed the experience, but we were able to grab a cosy booth next to an ironically mediocre hipster group of «super-fans,» and watch the match through their fixie bike locks and empty framed glasses. What I really enjoyed was the u-shaped layout. Two distinct rooms, nearly more like three, all split by a large bar smack in the middle. It made grabbing a drink a liiittle too easy. The array of regulars there was also highly amusing. From an older couple enjoying a roast to a young group of uni students with paper crowns on their heads, and of course the unfailing Arsenal supporters, this bar managed to please all of us. You’ll find me there often, drinking happily under the fairy lights.

F*^%ing rude bar staff. It was shooting for 4 stars(for about 10 minutes) until the bar staff stopped me from taking a picture of the goddamed candle at our table. Love, you ain’t some poncy London restaurant, stop being a mardy, snappy biatch and ask nicely next time. Being«nice» doesn’t cost a penny. Ps award winning harvest pale taste like what wash water taste like after a day in the fields. Mmmmmmm very harvesty. Avi the beer drinker appreciated it though. PPS Absolutely no redemption on leaving as there was a complete(another person, I might add) lurking stalkerish staff who zoned in on cleaning, washing, tidying before we even stepped out of our booth. I am all for efficiency but chillax, it was preeetty quiet. Yeah. I let it sit for over 12 hours. I don’t want to give them more than 1 star. Looser.

This was the first pub I discovered when I moved to the areabut it obviously didn’t leave much of an impression as it has taken me over 3 years to come back. It is actually quite a pleasant pub. I like the green tiled exterior and the dimly lit interior and the selection of ales served in dimpled mugs. They have a couple of big screens so this could also be a decent place to come for a match. What I didn’t like was how much of a head they seemed to leave on everyone’s ales. I don’t like complaining about that kind of thing in person, so I am instead registering my displeasure here by only giving it a 3.

Hey Lizzie, I HAVE taken a date here… while it didn’t work out between us, we both agreed the pub was great. It’s such a beautiful pub! Many pubs are old man-like…they smell like pee, they stop and stare at newcomers, Andy-Rooney-look a likes are sitting at the bar recounting how they walked five miles up-hill both ways in 10 feet of snow to get to a one room schoolhouse… yeah, that isn’t The New Rose. This pub is clean, beautiful with gorgeous carvings, yet completely comfortable and cozy with couches and chairs in both the front rooms and back rooms. My date and I had a pizza and a couple pints and both were really good. It’s completely a great date pub and I’ve gone back several times just to enjoy the friendliness of everyone. And, the bartenders will mix up some good olé fashioned American shots if you just show them what to do. many pubs will shut that down with a resounding NO! So go here for your kamikazes and lemon drop shots, people!

This is my adopted local. Not technically the closest, but pretty dang short of a stroll down Essex Road to get there. I really like this place due to the following scenarios: 1) Heading to pick up a package from Royal Mail, I get to Cross Street and the heavens open up unleashing a tidal flow of water from the sky. I am dressed in shorts and sandals. I duck in here for a pint and 30 minute wait for the rain to subside. 2) Watching the Wimbledon final, I see a guy there watching it as well that looks familiar. Turned out we went to college together and haven’t seen each other since graduation 10 years ago. We grew up in a small town and now live a few blocks away from each other in London. 4) Just so you know, number three has been removed for your safety. 5) The bar staff is really cool, friendly and really add to the vibe here. There is someone always(pretty much) making sure the music is pumping(at a reasonable volume) and it is pretty consistent music. They don’t try and be too trendster with their selection, playing stuff you can get into. This is why I love the New Rose. Also, when it is nice out, they have a Summer Garden in the back or you can sit a one of the few tables out front for some great people watching.

I am totally torn with this place I really want it to be a 5 star spot but for some reason it only just misses out. This is no regular boozer, this is a proper pub but beautiful inside. In winter they have fairy lights scattered all over the place and a selection of fantastically comfy mish-mash furniture. In summer the get little tables outside, perfect for people watching with cute gingham table cloths. Basically if you could have me in the form of a pub, I reckon this could probably be it. They have live bands, nice DJs and a strange selection of customers from«twats» to vintage bunny girls. A great place for a drink but the one thing I cant comment on is the food, never had it. I always seem to leave this place a little tipsy actually, it’s just so relaxing that you end up staying longer than you intended to. Oh and if you are thinking of taking a date here, do! You won’t regret it!

OK so from the outside, the New Rose looks like any other traditional ‘Old Man’ pub. But head inside and it more than makes up for its rather mundane exterior. Shabby, comfortable seating and a cosy vibe makes for a great venue to enjoy some decent pub food with mates, or just a couple of ales.

The New Rose has really great pub food, one of the best things I can recommend about it. Its really great to sit outside on the benches on a summer’s evening with a drink. It gets pretty busy inside in the evenings, so it does detract from eating, but makes for great socializing. Its really well lit inside, with lots of fairy lights and low lighting. Its a great place to chill till the evening sets in and its time for dinner, and it saves you from having to move! I think its pretty loud inside, which is why its missing out on four stars.
