The restaurant /pub is beautiful. I’ve walked by The Malt House for a few months and only went in for the first time the other day. The atmosphere and style is great and looks really romantic. It’s also often quite busy which is always a great sign. I expected great things but was unfortunately let down. I ordered some liver pâté for starter which was incredible(very light) and I would almost consider going back. My girlfriends started wasn’t anything special and not was her main. I ordered the pork chop which had a really nice cabbage and mashed potato side but the actual pork chop wasn’t special. The service wasn’t great to be honest. After literally every course we had to ask for cutlery as it was taken away and not replace. Also even though there were staff, they didn’t seem to be doing much and could have been more helpful when getting the check, topping up wine etc. It was priced so I expected better service. All in all, I would recommend going to Al Santo next door for amazing Greek /Italian food instead.

Very busy gastro pub so advisable to book. The staff were hit and miss from a service point of view but one member of staff managed to pull it back. The food was really good. The fish and chips served with a lovely pea purée and the steak was melt in the mouth. Finished with sticky toffee pudding and a coffee. Good selection of real ales served here also. Worth a look if in the area.

More restaurant than pub. We arrived at 10pm on a Friday night and it was only half full. Most people were eating. They have maybe a dozen tables or couch seating areas in addition to a good sized bar with lots of standing room. Has a slightly upscale, comfy vibe. We had a couple rounds before last call around 11pm. Drinks were OK but the cider on tap was unpleasant.

Recommended for a small group or date night. Make sure you get a booking on the weekend. Really nice pies on a monthly schedule…

Good beers and great food — a step up from your spit-and-sawdust local but no Michelin-gastropub snootiness. Beers on tap from the freedom brewery. Excellent scotch eggs. Nice garden.

It’s pie year(apparently)!! Meaning they do a different pie every month with wine/beer included all for £10. This excites me a lot. The food here is amazing(scotch eggs especially), cosy atmosphere, not too overcrowded and nice staff. The beer garden is awesome for the summer too.

We came here with a cousin who lives near by because we were looking for good pub food. They were very accommodating with our two tiny humans(1 – 2 years old) and turns out their food is top notch. My husband got an outstanding fish and chips. Now I’m no fish and chips expert but this was such a pleasant surprise. It was a large portion of fish in a batter that wasn’t too oily or greasy and the chips were perfection. I had an unusual ‘burger’ that had spiced haloumi cheese, courgette(zucchini), tomato salsa, and pepper. I was under the false impression it came with a beef patty in it. Turns out it’s a fantastic vegetarian option. The other burgers our party had were met with great enthusiasm. The other fun discovery here was the cocktails. Aside from the great beers they had a special Skittles drink. You can choose from a few flavors. And you may assume, as did our lovely server, that we ladies were ordering these drinks. Wrong. My husband and his cousin enjoyed these fruity delights in a glass, after each downing a pint. But the sip of Strawberry Skittle I tried was pretty darn good, even after drinking my Guinness.

Why did my hamburger taste like lamb?

Tiny portions, big prices. Our office group stopped off for a fast burger on the way back to work, even the girls were still hungry.

I’d have given 5 stars had I ordered the roast, but instead, ordered fish and chips and was disappointed by the fish side so — — — 4stars. Fish tasted weird, sweet, strange, awful but chips were world class. Beef roast was one of the best in London I’ve tried, as was their ale and the service. I hated my fish at Hibiscus as well(2 michelin star owned by same people). Perhaps they hate fish and screw it up on purpose to dissuade its consumption?

Earning 3 stars because of it having a secret. A damn well-kept secret. Possibly, very possibly, I’d even venture to say most assuredly. The best. Burger. In town. And there are a LOT of places trying to lay claim to this. It’s definitely not here that i expected to find it. I’ve sampled every burger in town. Smithfield, Gaucho, GBK, Byron, meat liquor, small independent places, 5* hotel restaurants… I tell you… I like my red reassembled grilled meat! And this little unassuming — bland even — place, has a DAMN good one! Décor & ambience: bland. Totally bland. Lots of wood, painted white. Looks good in a magazine, but feels a bit empty and alien, like a gallery space. Plus, it was borderline dead on a Thursday evening. Mix in the occasional lapse in music, and you’ve got a killer(ha) combo. Our conversation paused at one time… there was… utter… complete… pin-dropping… silence. Across the entire pub’s dining room. Creepy. Service: Absolutely lovely, if rather slow to come take our orders. The strategy followed is «give them wine and leave them at it»… So that we finish a bottle, two if they could, before we even order dinner. Sneaky! Food: Do not, under ANY circumstances, order the shrimp starter. It’s frozen solid, and served in that state. It’s crumbly, but you’re supposed to spread it. I had to hack at the crumbly frozen mess to even get it out of its little mould. Horrible. Didn’t really taste that good either. Not bad. Just… Maybe worth £2, not £9.75. Bleargh. They were lovely about it, offered to replace it, but I was curious to see what on earth it was, and paid for the thing. Don’t make the same mistake. BURRGERRRRRR: Toasted quality bun: Check. Perfectly grilled meat: Check. Onion relish: Check. Awesome pickle: Check. A-mazing double-fried chips: Check. Reasonable price for burger + fries(£14?). Just go try it. If you don’t like it, stick to Byron. They have more variety, I suppose… But damn… that relish!!!

The most recent Unilocal reviews here are a couple years old — this place was recently taken over by the people who run Michelin-starred Hibiscus. They added accommodation too — 5 or 6 guest rooms upstairs. I’m reviewing both the food and the room. Food: is fantastic. The menu changes daily, based on what is seasonal and local. Seasoning and execution is spot-on. e.g. Salad with melon and goats cheese sprinkled with flowers is almost too gorgeous to eat, but the flavors are great so you should definitely eat it. The cocktails are great. A little expensive but that’s typical London. This guy is a booze-wizard though — nicely balanced and made with interesting ingredients.(I’m not sure but he may be making his own bitters etc). Rooms: modern yet cozy. They did something heroic with the windows so the room is surprisingly quiet considering it is upstairs from a pub. The downside: you have to rely on the air conditioning because it is not possible to open the window. The included continental breakfast is generous(fresh fruit salad, warm pastries, toast, cereal) and service is great — they booked a car for us to Heathrow which was spot-on prompt and only 35£. I am stopping short of 5 stars because there are a few minor issues that should be sorted: service in the restaurant is well-intentioned but inexperienced, eg there are timing issues(order a glass of wine to go with the main but the food appears long before the wine does). In the rooms, there are a few details too, eg there is no soap dish or anywhere to put the shampoo in the shower, one day there were washcloths, but the other days none, stuff like that. The neighborhood is fun for a visitor since it is convenient enough for sightseeing but away from the tourist hordes. Overall if you are in the neighborhood you should definitely check this place out!

The Malt House holds a very dear place in my heart. The bartenders are so cool and chill and friendly. It feels like home whenever I walk in there. The food is always fantastic and is a wonderful comfort. This is the perfect place to hang out and feel welcome.

I’m so glad that I *finally* came to this pub. The darkened interior with the candle light tables always looked inviting from outside. I’m happy to report that the interior is just a cosy and nice. This isn’t quite poncy enough to be a gastro pub. But it’s also not grubby and smelly like you’re typical old man’s pub. You still have your bar with several beers on tap and there’s a flat screen telly situated in the corner. But the typical high tables and chairs are replaced with comfortable leather couches and proper dining tables. There is a nice fireplace off to one side and a respectable beer garden in the back. A guitarist is pitched up in the corner strumming away and there are several people lounging about reading books. In short, The Malt House is a coffee shop that serves booze. I too was there with my book in hand and ordered a pint of Hoegarten and cheesy chips. The whole things came out to be £5.50 which seemed a bit pricey at first. But I was happy to receive a mammoth portion of chips that would comfortably feed two. I also saw someone eating a Sunday roast the size of my head which makes the price of £10 not seem too expensive. Overall, I really like the laid back atmosphere of the pub and the bartenders were really friendly and welcoming. This is definitely in the forefront of becoming my local.

Following a refurb this place has turned itself around from being a nasty and threatening place full of Chelsea fc thugs and no-hopers to being a pleasant if not non-descript sort of a place with a little garden at the rear for summer bbq’s and somewhere to sit and chill. So all is o.k. over here now. They do basic but good food and the bar is slowly taking off and bringing in a few more people to give it a bit of atmosphere and people are starting to wake up to the fact that it is no longer off limits. Good luck to the team down there, that we perfectly pleasant on my recent visit, I hope that it continues to improve.
