Cramped, loads of rubbish to pick through, a minimalist’s nightmare. Yes. It’s great!

Junk, the remains of something that has been destroyed or broken up [syn: debris, dust, rubble, detritus] Shop, a mercantile establishment for the retail sale of goods or services; «he bought it at a shop on Cape Cod» [syn: store] Basically this is a place where you can purchase nonsense that you didn’t even want or realise you needed. It’s also a little bit amazing! Run by 2 old geezers Alice S is right, there is a ramshackle collection of stuff the you just wouldn’t put together, Actually if you are in the business for a bargain you may find one here, I can’t put a name on what they sell but there is a huge collection of nonsense to browse. Seriously, It’s a lovely place, go visit!

When i saw this place, I was intrigued. The Junk Shop. I thought the insides would be full of undiscovered treasures, hidden beneath masses of stuff. I was disappointed to find, however, upon inspection, that the name of this shop was no false advertising. It really is just a shop filled to the brim, piled high as Everest, with junk. The place was more stuffed than your gourmand neighbor after his Christmas dinner Really. In some places you couldn’t even get through the layers of stuff. I didn’t see anything that really impressed me on the inside. Nothing, I felt, had really much value or interest. Maybe for someone else it will.

The Junk Shop is precisely what it says on the front of the shop; a load of old junk which other people have decided that they no longer want. However, we all know that one person’s junk is another person’s treasure. The stock is so varied, everything from antique tables and furniture to commemorative plates and books which are years out of print. There is a lot of bric-à-brac and tat which clearly some people just did not have the heart to throw out. It’s impossible to find anything specific in this shop. Layout wise it is like walking into somebody’s garden shed with everything just piled wherever there is room. You daren’t touch anything in case it all comes crashing down and a lot of items are either out of reach or just difficult to see. A lot of patience is required here and if you wish to make the most of the shop ensure that you give yourself a good few hours to browse. I would also very strongly advise that you keep children away from the shop in case their temptation to play lands them in trouble. Price wise, a lot of what is sold is not cheap. That said, a lot of it is old and probably worth the money if you collect that kind of thing anyway. My purpose for coming in here was to look for Christmas presents but it turned out to be a little fruitless.

I don’t know where else in South London you can find an antique javelin, a birdcage and an autobiography of Frank Sinatra on the same table. The Junk Shop is an Aladdin’s cave of rubbish/treasure on Greenwich South Street. The stock varies from biographies and historical artifacts(mainly right wing paraphernalia– a Daily Mail series on the modern monarchy, an enormous hardback on the Third Reich and a Thatcher biography) Amongst all the military-themed bits of tat, there are actually some very good finds– there were some cool old 1950s Christmas cards, some 1960s newspapers in excellent condition and some beautiful vintage postcards. It is a funny old place but definitely worth a rummage through.
