Wetherspoons opposite Wanstead station at the beginning of the high street. When the first couple of us arrived there were only small tables available so we had to grab one, but with enough free chairs available we were able to expand until we had a ridiculous number of people around a table for max 4 persons. Rather lived up to a stereotype when 2 chaps, both old enough to my Grandfather ended up in a physical fight because one had supposedly disrespected the other at the bar suggesting he had jumped the queue. Their brief grapple was swiftly broken up fortunately as I was worried about the damage one of them could have done with his walking stick. The beer was in very good nick and I even had time to enjoy their sweet potatoe, spinach and chickpea curry, which is pretty good for the price!

Misteak Tuesday Weatherspoons offer a multitude of themed food days, like the Thursday Curry Club and the Sunday Roast Club. Well, Tuesday is Steak Club… and let’s just say this was a mighty fine MISTEAK. I ordered the 14oz Aberdeen Angus Rump, and note that I ordered this medium rare. 30 mins later my food arrived, the Steak looked noticeably charred and as I cut into there was absolutely no sign of a steak cooked to my liking. It was well done, in fact it was too well done. My friend’s steak was equally unsatisfactory, I was starting to notice a pattern. Anyway, I summoned a member of staff and asked them to replace my steak, and this time to cook it to my liking; medium rare. Well, it turned out they run out of that particular cut of steak. I asked for 8oz sirloins to compensate, however they were unable to provide this service. Thoroughly disappointed, I settled for an 8oz sirloin and half a rack of ribs. Not quite what I was after, but to be fair the meal was half decent. My real gripe here is that the ‘chef’ is not competent enough to cook a steak, I mean how hard is it? Anyone can put a slab of meat on a grill and cook it to their liking, it’s not like asking a 2 year old to solve a Rubik’s Cube. Ill finish on a positive, I had a delicious pint of Ale, I think it was Doom Bar. Very delicious indeed, and I certainly recommend The George as a place to have a few drinks, just steer clear of the steak. PS — a special shout out to Gemma who’s service was top draw despite all the issues with food. Happy Eating!!! Regards, Hermes Michael Solomonides

Good cheap food and beer with a welcoming atmosphere. Always have good random beers and a large range of value for money food.

ordered our two sunday roasts today 28÷11÷10. 30 minutes later still not delivered… finally arrived as I was querying the food. The meals were STONECOLD!!! took them back… waited another 10 minutes. The roast pork arrived without the apple sauce. The waitress swanned passed with a rag & cleaning product. We queried the sauce and she went and got it. It was in a minute paper cup, that was plonked on the table. She’d obviously washed her hands since touching the rag — NOT. The glasses were dirty and the measure of merlot was SHORT(illegal) and the cutlery SOILED. the potatoes were deep fried. the sage stuffing was deep fried, peas & carrots — just adequate and 3 brussel sprouts — poor, approx 3 tablespoons of gravy the yorkshire pud was lovely but definately not worth £8.00

Reasonable priced beers and a pretty good selection at that. Sometimes the tables don’t get cleaned away quick enough, so there’s occasionally plates lying about. I’ve also noticed that there are not the number of bar staff there once was.

Yeah okay its a Wetherspoons, so I don’t need to tell you much about this place. However it does have a nice atmosphere and where else in Wanstead can you get a bottle of rose for £6? If you want cheap drinks(and food), no music and not to crowded this place is for you. Also has a decent size car park and beer garden out the back.

It’s Wetherspoons, do you really need to know any more? Crowd actually varies according to the time of day, unusually it is used by all from old fogeys at lunchtimes to young(often very!!) kids on Saturday nights.

The good old George, the pillar of my youth, the many friday night’s drinking there with seemingly everyone from your school being there for some unknown reason. Why is it so popular? Who knows, maybe J. D Wetherspoon has something to do about it, or maybe it’s the lame beer garden in the rear. I’d go with the former. Also, who reads the books on the bookshelves in there? Does anyone? We know your game Mr. Wetherspoon, I am on to your mock bookshelves. All in all… Good prices and good times to be had by all.

The George is a very popular pub and is in a good location, close to a tube station and two resturaunts as well as a snooker club. The atmosphere is nice and lively, the general crowd is younger but you do get quite a mix. The food is good and I allways enjoyed the Beer and Burger for a fiver. The beer garden is nice, with heaters for smokers and quite a few rounded tables. There is a good selection of drinks and on mondays you can get them at a much cheaper price. It is very spacious inside with two floors being accesible and it has a good seating arrangement. Overall a good pub with a good atmosphere and on most Fridays and Saturdays it will be quite busy.
