The Crown & Greyhound

Definitely not the cheapest pub in the area, but that’s not the worst of it. I have never been so appalled with the poor atmosphere and shockingly poor staff attitude. It was like a couple in their 60s were drunk, were served more wine, fell over at the table leaving a large glass of wine across the table and another across the floor, staff looked on, none felt the need to help get the 60+ year old up off the floor, soon after three different members of the public pointing out to staff the rather large wet patches making the table unusable, not one willing to clean up. You would thing that it couldn’t happen in Dulwich Village, oh how wrong you can be. I recommend the place is avoided until the staff and management improve their attitude and service.

Not a bad pub, with a nice bar & garden. The main gripe I have with the pub is the restaurant. Everything about it should be good, however it is just chaotic, understaffed & slow. This is disappointing, as the food itself is good & of a high quality. The few times I have gone have been on a Sunday & so this maybe the reason.

We popped in here for lunch today when Dulwich Picture Gallery couldn’t find us a table. It was a vey mixed experience and I wish I could give the place 3.5 stars instead of 4 — let me tell you why…
The building itself is gorgeous, lots of lovely stained glass, nooks, crannies, little rooms, big rooms, a circular bar in the middle and it has a really nice eclectic, not too cluttered, warm and cosy feel to it.
We sat in the restaurant, as it promised table service and we didn’t feel like getting up to go to the bar every time we wanted a drink. We chose various starters, main courses and drinks and waited to be served. And waited. And waited… the only person not doing any waiting was the waitress herself. (boom boom!) I never got to the bottom of what the issue was, it wasn’t that crowded, but we could never get her attention, she was super stressed, but I couldn’t see what with and our food sat on the pass for a good 15 minutes before we got it. Everyone was really nice and friendly and apologetic, but that didn’t make up for the wait!
However, and this is what makes this a 4, not a 3 star place for me… the food was very very good indeed. I was primed to send the whole thing (5 plates) back if it had been dry or cold in any way due to the wait, but I couldn’t fault it much at all.
There were five of us, and between us we tried the crab paté, battered black pudding and soup of the day to start. They were all really nice — the battered black pudding especially so, and at £3.50 for a pretty big bowl of it (it’s listed as a bar snack) was unbelievably good value.
For mains, two of us had the haddock and chips, while the others had the halloumi burger, the mushroom gnocchi and the sausages and mash. The fish was exceptionally good, with a light, yet very interesting and tasty batter, crushed peas (actually quite uninspiring) and tartare sauce from a jar. The chips were lovely and big and crispy. The sausages and mash looked amazing and were herby and creamy respectively. The halloumi burger was fine, but having been in the pass for so long the lettuce had not just wilted, but actually died on the plate, and the very thin fries had gone a little hard. If I had been eating that, I may not have been as forgiving as the person who did eat it all and really enjoyed it. The gnocchi looked amazing, but the verdict was that it was a little involved — it had spinach, sweet potato and beans as well as the mushrooms. However, that is exactly as it was billed and I think that it lived up to its description.
I have a dreadful cough at the moment, so to drink I tried the house hot buttered lemonade, which comes with a cinnamon stick — absolutely delicious and perfect for a froggy throat.
So, they lose at LEAST 1, if not 1.5 stars for the hopeless (yet perfectly pleasant) service, but the building, ambiance and food clawed it back for them!

Possibly the worst bar staff in the UK. No idea who’s next. Expect a long wait. Avoid if you are thirsty.

I booked a Christmas party at this place and was very pleased with the staff and atmosphere. Organising the event was pleasant and easy as the manager listened to my enquiries. The food was delicious and I visit The Crown regularly now

Good beer and good food. BBq’s at the weekend in the garden. Also has a lovely conservatory at the back.
In the winter i love to sit buy the fire in this laid back establishment. Is family friendly to the point where it can be a bit over run with children at the weekends.

We wandered past this pub on the way down to the park. Our plans almost waivered somewhat, just on account of how inviting and lovely this pub looked on a gloriously sunny day. Beautiful people in the sunshine, sipping ice cold ciders and enjoying life. It’s the dream. But on we went, to Dulwich Park, and had a thoroughly nice day.
On the way back however, we couldn’t not stop in. The seats out the front in the sun were still packed, so we ventured inside to find an old school pub, round bar and all, with a decent and varied selection of drink. We spotted a beer garden out back and investigated. It’s HUGE. Perfect spot for a summer’s day. Big old pub this, with lots of outdoor space and an extravagant quiz master on a Sunday night. Wouldn’t this just be your perfect local pub eh? Well, if this is your local, you couldn’t help but be happy with how your life has turned out. Dulwich is just lovely.

I’m definitely a fan of the Crown and Greyhound which is conveniently located right in the heart of Dulwich Village. It’s got reliably good food, quick service and a decent range of beer. My favourite aspect of it though is its sprawling interior, with plenty of space, nooks and crannies to take up drinking and eating positions. The matching of tables and chairs is charmingly ramshackle, with a range of different sizes and types thrown together. But that’s all part of the appeal.

Man, this is a busy place on a Saturday: is it the only place in town? Well, we are in DULLwich after all. Nice-​enough place, though: reasonable selection of beer and the foods pretty good: freshly cooked to order. Chips too chippy, not enough French Fry. If the Gallery’s worked-​up the appetite then try it before taking the haul back to civilsation

Awesome pub. Friendly service, huge range of drinks on tap. Loads of space, and a real fire. All you could ask for!

A proper local pub for local people.
This is a nice enough place, though unless you’re a posh-​ish Dulwichite, you may feel a bit out of place. It’s all families and rambling rooms and a nice upstairs and it doesn’t at all feel like it’s in Zone 3.
More like it’s Dulwich village time.
Proper good pub grub, a couple of real ales, and it’s a good old place. Especially nice on a Sunday Summer’s afternoon nursing away a hangover with the help of a roast and a pint…

This is an excellent pub located just a few minutes walk from dulwich picture gallery good beer (nice selection of real ales-​well kept) good food — midrange price wise, carvery on sunday –menu during week. child/​family friendly. dunno what the person grumbling about the foods on about everytime i visit it’s perfect.

The Crown & Greyhound is a cornerstone of the Dulwich village area, which has all the trappings of a quaint village pub despite being in located in one of the busiest cities in the world. This pub has a large area to accommodate the many visitors, with a decent beer garden in both the front and rear and a separate dining area, this is a very good pub to bring the family.

The Crown and Greyhound is little more than a dated old man’s pub. It is very popular, especially in my experience as a venue for parties and events, but I find the atmosphere stale and disorganized.
The last time that I attended a party at the pub, they totally messed up our food orders and did not seem to know what they were doing. The food however, was very good (when it arrived).
The one time I do like the Dog as it is often known, is during a Dulwich summer evening when the sun is setting, the atmosphere buzzing and the benches outside could not be more tempting.
Sadly this comes around only once or twice a year.

The Crown and Greyhound (or the dog as it’s called locally) is a charming pub in a charming area. With two huge bar areas, a dining room and large front and back beer gardens there is always somewhere to sit, despite its well deserved local popularity.
The pub serves up homemade traditional English food (a little pricey but this is Dulwich don’t you know) as well as real ales and top notch wines. Monday is quiz night and a great opportunity to go head to head with the snobby locals.

Very large pub this, with plenty of taps to go round.
Nicely mismatched seating throughout the 2 bar areas & seemingly has all its original wood/​glasswork. Non-​intrusive but well chosen music on.
Didn’t venture into the beer garden but I imagine it’s a good size too & that the whole place is very popular of a weekend.
The menu was certainly tending towards the gastro end of the market but prices seemed reasonable fo what was on offer (we were at one point brought cutlery & condiments and thought a free feed was in the offing but no grub turned up).
Dulwich Village itself was very pleasant looking & other than a few unfortunate bits of graffiti in the gents this seems an ideal place to while away a whole day eating & drinking.

The Crown and Greyhound was an excellent choice for Sunday carvery. The place was very busy when we arrived around 1pm but there was still plenty of food left. The price for one round of food is £10 which isn’t bad given the quality of it. The pork was fantastic and definitely my favourite choice while the roast potatoes hit the bottom and were a little too dry and overdone.
The atmosphere was really nice with lots of families there and little side rooms to enjoy the Sunday paper. We sat outside in the back garden and enjoy a pint and some good Sunday carvery. Mmmmmm, I’ll be back here to check it out at other times as the place seemed really cool. The food is served on Sunday from 12−2pm but by the end there was little left so I’d suggest getting there no later than 1:30 if you fancy the carvery.

The Crown and Greyhound is placed in the heart of Dulwich, a ten minute walk from Herne Hill and a nice walk at that! At a glance this public house is grand in appearance but friendly. If you were to take a visit here in the summer you could find yourself struggling to find an outdoor table as many people like to meet here after work and happily sit with their friends relaxing until last orders. As well as seating to the front of the pub there is a fantastic seating area to the back of the pub with an amazing BBQ and childrens play area, and after the non smoking ban the Crown and Greyhound has accomodated for smokers by providing a vast amount of outdoor heaters with the majority of the beer garden/​eating area covered by a rather large umbrella!
A friend an I enjoyed a lovely sunday meal sitting outside in our T –shirts in mid October without feeling at all cold.
The carvery on a Sunday is nice but only serves until 4pm, we arrived around 2pm and they had run out of yorkshire puddings, so we were not too happy about that but still enjoyed our meals. The price tag could be cheaper at around £9.50 per person the food is nice and tasty but average.
I love this pub and it’s a nice relaxing place to visit with friends or to take your children, the locals are friendly and Dulwich village is a beautiful place too. I would recommend a visit especially if you like cherry beer :)

From the outside, the Crown & Greyhound looks like your typical London pub, albeit set within the pricey and exclusive Dulwich Village. Once through the doors however, the cavernous interior opens up into a series of varied seating arrangements, accompanied by several different bars offering a good selection of drinks. Towards the back lies a more modern (and smoke free) arrangement for the restaurant, with an excellent selection of modern pub fare. Further beyond this lies the garden, which on a Sunday is packed with wealthy South London families and their children. A good, reliable option any time of the day and for any occasion.
