Horrible and rude service. Waited for food for over 30 min. After been served the food been told to get my own cutlery(which is alright) but only to find out they have no forks. Also while ordering food asked for gravy to find out it’s not possible for me to get as it’s not on the menu. Ok left it as it is, first Sam smiths pub that refused to serve gravy with a meal. Went to ask for the forks at the bar. Which I’ve been asked to show my ID, not that I already had an alcoholic drink while waiting for the meal. Way below the standard of Sam smiths. Worked for the company for 3 years and never seen anything like this in any of the pubs. Really disappointed. Will not be coming back.

The angel has incredible views — definitely some of the best in London. It’s often busy as soon as there’s a hint of sun — there’s space to sit or stand outdoors and look over the river, tower bridge, and the shard beyond. However, although it’s great for a drink, I would not recommend eating here. I have done twice and would not again. It’s all very basic, frozen food which arrived cold in the centre. Décor is a bit dated inside too. A shame because with a bit of TLC and some home cooked food this pub could be incredible.

Atmosphere: 0 We were new to Bermondsey and were looking for a nice pub nearby go to. My friend is a charity fundraiser and I am an artist. We saw that it was overlooking the river and thought we would have a look to see if we thought it be would be pleasant to go there. For me it is important that a pub has nice views and a friendly, homely atmosphere. As soon as we went in we got daggers, and there was no welcome. It was like stepping into one of those old time American saloons and you ‘were an outsider’. However, we did have a sarky comment, even though we had only been in there five minutes! I would give this place a miss, there are friendlier local pubs.

The views from the Angel are really what make it. It’s perched right on the river — in fact, when you sit outside on the terrace at the back, you could almost convince yourself that the building itself is sitting in the middle of the Thames. It’s a Sam Smith’s, so the drinks are cheap, it’s spacious, and there’s the steady stream of regulars and grumpy bar staff — all standard for the chain. The décor inside is sort of reminiscent of one of those old hotels that you hated being taken to as a child, and as the whole place in general is rather overheated this feeling isn’t quick to go away. That said, I’d go again just for the view and a cheap pint or two.

One of my favorite pubs and definitely one of the best views you can get in London: from the windows you get a spectacular view towards Tower Bridge. They also serve Sam Smith beers: the Extra Stout and Organic Lager some of my favorite beers in the world(and I’ve had a few…). It’s way off the beaten track so doesn’t get busy even on weekends… Bring cash as their card machine never seems to be working…

Great views of Tower Bridge and the London skyline from the ‘back end’, cheap beer(by London standards), and reasonably-priced food(about a fiver for most main dishes). Interior is warm and clean, with many different spaces — with varying levels of privacy — to sit. Look forward to returning.

Tastefully refurbished Sam Smiths house in an incredible location with fabulous views of the Thames towards Tower Bridge. Not a handpump in sight so I opted for a coffee, grudgingly prepared by the sulky barmaid. We sat upstairs in a quiet and comfortable room which was sadly overheated, reminding me of a hotel bedroom. A nice enough pub if you happen to be passing but certainly not a destination venue.

Been here a couple times and The Angel is one of my favorite pubs in SE16. The location is hard to beat: It’s right on the river, and surrounded by lots of open space. You can spectacular views of the river, city, Tower Bridge, and the Shard from upstairs. The upstairs is a nice cozy room where all you want to do is relax and sprawl out. It’s a Samuel Smiths pub, so you won’t get a selection of drinks beyond the Sam Smiths branded brews. The pub itself is divided into little areas to sit and enjoy, just like a pub should feel like. There is also food served, and it wasn’t bad, on par with food at any standard pub. Overall, it’s a great place to take visitors for a relaxing, memorable, and uncrowded London pub experience.

Another to add to my lists of favourite London pubs and where to take the out-of-towners when they visit. A Sammy Smith boozer with a small terrace right on the Thames and great views from big windows(low tide offers excellent urban detritus scenery and high tide feels like the pub’s about to float away to sea), this is a cosy, welcoming spot for elbow benders, families, folks strolling along the Thamespath and anyone appreciative of a proper pub with East End atmo, South London non-pretension and decent drinks at even more decent prices(two soft drinks, a pint and a packet of crisps for £5.20 on my last visit). Next sunny day I’m playing hooky and heading here.

The Skinny: The views are good with some good English beers and ales. The Fat: The bartender came upstairs and told us if we’re not going to buy anything else, we need to leave. Several of us were still drinking our beers and he came up twice. We were there for 10 minutes. So don’t expect to find good service. Beer is good and the views are good. That warrants one star and another for the history of the pub.

I really like this pub, which is a Samuel Smiths… so it’s nice and cheap. The building itself is great with lots of nooks, crannies and snugs. The food is ok, but very much pub-style home cooking rather than of restaurant calibre. Great location on the river and a nice riverside balcony facing the river to sup your pint. It’s also noticeably less ‘lairy’ than some other Bermondsey boozers. Oh, and Captain Cook used to drink here too, and allegedly planned some of his voyages pouring over maps in the bar. How cool is that?

This is a beautiful old pub that sits right on Bermondey wall with a terrace over the Thames. The ground floor has several rooms each with a certain character and the lounge upstairs is quite elegant. The views over the river are magnificent. The place has had a full and very sympathetic restoration and all over it is a charming pub. There is a strange ‘snug’ type bar in the middle of the main room downstairs that is made of 7 foot high wooden panels that start about a foot off the floor, to get into this section you have to use a door in the paneling that you will have to crouch down to use unless you are under 4 foot tall. Curiouser and curiouser! It’s a Samuel Smiths house that, not unusually for this chain, sell no real ale, but do purvey some pleasant lagers for pennies. Being where it is, it is a local pub for local people(in the League of Gentlemen sense), but that aside a nice place. Sit upstairs or on the terrace, gaze out across the river and watch time go by.
