Don’t you just love it when you accidently stumble upon something brilliant?. My memory doesn’t recall exactly why I stumbled down the little alley where this shop resides; but I did. It’s probably because of my natural tea-hunting instincts. To begin with, it’s great for just buying loose tea. Their stock comes in wonderful little jars — it’s a bit expensive but the kind of expensive you don’t mind simply because they’ve laid it out so eloquently, making you feel like a tea-connoisseur. But the best part about it, as touched upon in another review — is the wonderful experience of sitting down to have a cup of tea here. I remember one experience vividly. I ordered a Jasmine tea — and then took a seat by the wall. I got lost in some pointless junk magazine they’d left around. Minutes later this glass pot filled with golden jasmine found it’s way to me. Somehow, miraculously, they had brewed the perfect Jasmine. I sat there, taking my time, as I wasn’t meeting my girlfriend at the train station for another few hours. It was great. As much as you might think London has good cafes, I find it so hard to find a comfortable place where I really want to pass the hours. So this was a joy. As I ordered a second pot of Jasmine, my bladder begged me not too. But I did. As I paid I asked the dude working there how he makes the perfect Jasmine, it’s just not something I’ve ever been able to master at home. He chatted to me at length about the brewing process; and afterwards I mumbled something about how much I totally love the place and would often return. I sat down, eager to enjoy my second pot of Jasmine. The guy brought over a large pot and said«As you love it so much, we thought we’d give you a large pot». This amazed me. This is so un-London. We don’t do that, we don’t pay attention to our customers and kindly give them things for free. Suffice to say, I was extremely happy with the experience. If you like tea, head down to Tea-Orient. It’s a bit of a trick to find but when you do, you won’t be disappointed. And you might just find me there with a cuppa and a book.

A different and soothing purveyor of caffeine in the form of loose tea leaves that sticks out among Oxford Street’s abundance of coffee outlets. Tea Orient has a fantastic selection of green, black, and even red tea. If you’re unfamiliar with the many varieties, or just not sure what to order, the staff is very knowledgeable and will gladly let you have a sniff of whatever piques your interest. Once you’ve ordered… they kindly ask you to take a seat while they brew your tea to the peak of perfection — no guesswork on your part. Then they bring you a little tray with a glass pot, a little glass teacup, and a glass plate sporting a single biscuit(surprise!) The music is calming and this is the perfect place to focus on a book, collect yourself after a busy day of shopping, or have a quiet and serious conversation with a friend. Only complaint is that the seating is a little awkward… mainly it’s a long nook of high bar stools with wooden tray-like slats jutting from the wall… a little hard to explain … but the main point is that it’s not really conducive for meeting up with more than one person!
