St. Mark Hotel

Sis dans une rue tout à fait charmante… pardon, charming… À deux minutes du métro… Dans un quartier agréable avec des pubs et des commerces sympas…
Et avec un petit déjeuner inclus dans le prix de la chambre… Et pas cher pour Londres…
Bön, je né vais pas vous le cacher, mon avis est assez mitigé sur cet hôtel, dont le rapport qualité/​prix n’est pas des plus intéressants à moins d’y inclure l’intérêt du quartier et la proximité, en métro, de bon nombre de coin sympas de la capitale anglaise.
Beaucoup de choses sont vétustes dans cet hôtel, à commencer par certains boîtiers électriques dans les chambres, les moquettes et le mobilier. Les chambres elles-​mêmes sont vraiment petites avec des micro-​kitchenettes habilement dissimulées dans les placards. Néanmoins, tout est propre et bien tenu.
Aucune des prises n’est aux normes continentales, mais sur simple demande on vous prêtera un adaptateur à l’accueil… s’il en reste des disponibles.
Attendu qu’il est inclus dans le prix de la chambre, né vous attendez pas à un petit déjeuner pantagruélique: céréales, œufs durs et fromage tranché seront à votre menu du matin.
En revanche, la wi-​fi se paie et plutôt cher: 2 £ pour une heure, puis en tarif dégressif jusqu’à l’illimité pour 25 £…
Outré ce détail agaçant, c’est un hôtel honnête pour le prix, la ville, le quartier, l’accessibilité… où vous dormirez bien, mais où vous né serez pas pressés de rentrer le soir et que vous quitterez rapidement le matin pour profiter des plaisirs d’ailleurs.

We got off the tube at Earl Court around 10pm and after about 5 minutes, were standing on an adorable street lined with brick four-​story buildings– all hotels and apartments. If this is London, I’m in love, I said to myself.
The St. Mark is a modest hotel, though I was forewarned not to expect luxury if staying in a mid-​priced hotel. (Actually by American standards it was pretty pricey.) Our hotel room was on the fourth floor, which means eight sets of stairs. Eight sets of stairs with three 50lb suitcases is QUITE fun… but the guy at the front desk helped us with one.
The rooms are tiny but clean. We had one full and one twin bed standing head-​to-​head, a tiny kitchenette and a small bathroom with shower. Practically any Best Western I’ve stayed at in the US is larger and more accommodating, but again, I knew not to expect something grand.
Their free breakfast is hardboiled eggs, toast and cereal. Again, simple.
So why am I not complaining and freaking out that I could barely turn around in the shower and the bed wasn’t that soft? Because the hotel is very conveniently located and clean, and contributed to a wonderful stay in a city that I absolutely fell in love with.

My quest for affordable and not dodgy London accommodation, Part 1:
Knowing that London ranks as one of the most expensive places to live in, I realized it might take a while until I find a hotel that doesn’t rip me off and is both not filthy and centrally located. First try: St. Mark Hotel in Earl’s Court.
The area itself is great– lots of shops, restaurants, some pubs; the tube station only a 3 minute walk away, and pretty close to Victoria station.
On the positive side, I only paid £30 per night for a single room (during the week and off-​season). That included breakfast (which I haven’t tried) and free wi-​fi. The bathroom was clean and the room included a fridge, water heater plus coffee and a TV.
Downside: my room was located right next to the reception and faced the street. The street’s a quiet one but the clerks sometimes get into heated discussions about politics or football, didn’t quite understand their Arabic.
To sum it up, decent value for the price if you’re just looking for a place to crash. And, bring some ear plugs…
