This is shut please remove. Obviously not that good to close in one of the busiest areas in London

Whenever someone from another country complains about English food being bad, I take them to Square Pie. Here you get tasty, hearty pies, decent mash and delicious gravy. The mushy peas aren’t bad either, nor are the sides. The pricing does feel a bit like they are trying to rip you off but once you get over the price you won’t regret the food. This branch only drops a star because its so small and seating is limited to 3 stools and a small bench.

a pasty, mushy peas and mash is staple British take-away. lamb-rosemary, steak-kidney, cottage pie i’ve tried and liked. in pricey London, a smashing meal for under 10 quid.

Again, in London for business, and this particular lunch I had a craving for steak and kidney pie. Honestly, it’s difficult to have a craving if 1) you’ve never had it before in its country of origin, and b) the only time you’ve had it was at an English-style pub in Phoenix, AZ(shout out to George and Dragon!!!). And, I want one native — with lots of kidney and lard in the crust and lots of gravy. Square Pie did not disappoint. In the resto, my eyes lock onto«steak and kidney pie. With mash. And gravy.» Done. And done. And done. Then the most amazing thing happened… the counter pie clerk asked me, «Wooood you lyke gravy over everything guv’nor(ok, she didn’t say guv’nor, but it’s hard to do a British accent in a Unilocal review).» And I was like, «You mean the pie too?». She nodded and proceeded to do the most glorious thing I have ever seen — she ladled beautifully shiny, dark brown gravy all over the pie, my mashed potatoes and the mashed peas. Glorious. Absolutely glorious. I think I must’ve had tears in my eyes because the cashier handed me some napkins when I handed her my credit card(or maybe that was just to go with my meal. Whatev). I scurried back to the office with my pie in box in hand. I couldn’t tear into that bad boy any faster when I forked my first mouthful of British pie into my drooling mouth. Oh. Em. Gee. Delicious. Crusty crusty, flaky, nicely browned. Beefy, not-too-salty-but-salty-enough gravy. Good pieces of steak. But wait, where was the kidney? I rooted around the pie with my fork and spoon and came up with… exactly 4 pieces of kidney. FAIL. I wanted a lot more kidney. Waaaaah. The lack of kidney did not detract from the pure deliciousness of the pie. The mash was good(duh, there was gravy all over it). And the mashed peas were good as well(read last comment on the mash). All in all, I’m a fan of Square Pie. And, as MacArthur said to the Filipinos in WWII, «I shall return.» Now if I can only find a pastie shop close to the office.

I am not sure who the king of the pie is, but I am a northern boy and let me tell you, I know pies. Square Pie is beginning to build a reputation of being good. It was time for the pie master to put this reputation to the test. SP claim to have made over 108 different flavour pies in 8yrs. This is impressive, but the proof is in the pudding — give me pie! You can buy a pie with mash and gravy, but I didn’t want distractions, just give me that pie. The special of the day had a date with destiny. As my teeth sank into the golden pastry, flavours of chicken and ham exploded upon my palette. Mere seconds later, the familiar arching of my back began. I felt and heard an inhuman growling emitting from within, my brain started to cloud with thoughts of chasing down wild boar, and antelope, me, wild eyed, tearing into their hides, I could hold it in no longer. Hurling my cutlery, I picked up that bad boy pie and smashed it into my face, rubbing that stunning goodness into my wanton mouth. «My dear God! May the lord have mercy! Satan must have made this with his own hand!» It was a tasty pie. Square Pie is no paltry chip shop snack, they are the real deal. There are few pie shops in London I’d class as ‘da bomb,’ but Square Pie is an undisputed challenger for the crown.

Square Pie is a recent discovery for me And I’ve never looked back. When I’m feeling down or need something substantial to eat, I go here! The pies are great, there’s a large range on offer, the boxes are leak proof(to an extent) so there’s little mess and generally it’s a good place to go to get some stodge in you before an evening drinking with friends on the Wharf. The quite major stumbling block on this place is the price. Now food can be quite expensive but this seem prohibitively so. I know you’re paying for a meal and thus the meal is comparible to restaurants, but you’re not paying for service charges or table service. I’m paying for a take away pie and mash in gravy! This makes this place one of those cafes you go once in a while instead of being a regular.

When working at Canary Wharf, Friday became Pieday. In fact, whenever something went wrong in the office, or preparation for a meeting bombed, or it was raining, or someone had been dumped, it required a quick decamp to Square Pie to put All Things Right once again. The range is quite extraordinary, and I could go into reveries about the joys of fresh and flaky pastry over organic meat, sinfully buttery mash, mushy peas(or baked beans, if you must) covered in as much thick gravy as you like. The supposedly leakproof boxes didn’t always live up to the name, but if you were generally only sludging a hundred yards or so back to the office, this was very rarely a disaster. On the one memorable occasion it was, a replacement pie(free) was provided, with a free can of drink to make up for the inconvenience. Favourite pies of mine from Square Pie are the chicken and mushroom, and the steak and kidney.
