I think this is a great library, not massive but a good selection of books, as well as DVDs, CDs to rent and a selection to buy. There are plenty of seats, not all with tables, free WIFI, an activity area for kids and a friendly atmosphere, with helpful staff. Yes, it is underground, but that doesn’t bother me as it seems to do some people, lighting is good and it’s quiet, warm and a good place to spend a lunch hour when you want to escape the crowds or a noisy office. We need our libraries, so many have closed, let’s help keep this one open. Use it or lose it!

Shoe Lane library is the perfect location for lunch time stop in. I’ve pick up tons of current and classic books here and have not been disappointed with their selection. They have a great travel section and the whole library is laid out well. As noted in the other review, it is 2 floors underground, but I only find myself wander the shelves for about 10 mins picking a book and then getting out. The staff are friendly and you can now do renewals online.

I love my shoes and I love my libraries but I’m not convinced by Shoe Lane Library. It’s two floors underground with no natural light and no mobile phone signal. There’s barely any tables to sit and work at and the 8 computers you have to ask permission to use seem to be Intel 486s running Netscape or something. Effectively it’s a nuclear bunker with some books and old CDs. If it got accidentally sealed up by misplanned construction at ground level then it’d be a perfectly preserved time capsule of 1990s media. Sign in to Hotmail, put on the Spice Girls CD and flick through some Michael Crichton books.
