A lovely little bar on the increasingly trendy Bradbury Street. SJQ has cocktails galore and free live music in its basement. It’s not always jazz either. The bar staff are friendly and at 9pm the background music is not deafening on a Friday evening which always annoys me about other places. This is a good place to come and chat. It’s not very big but come early enough and it’s not that busy either and once the music starts everyone moves downstairs anyway.

SJQ was my introduction to Dalston, and what an intro it was! As you enter SJQ, there is a welcoming and cozy bar area done up with junky knick knacks and general kitsch. There is an uncoordinated random seating area with no theme to the décor. The basement level is an intimate performance area, where you’re very likely to not get a seat. We had to make do with floor seating, but it was nice. The performance wasn’t a jazz recital though. The crowd is enthusiastic and keen; all very respectful of the performing artists, and mostly in awe, just like me. The staff is friendly and efficient, cleaning up quickly and quietly in the midst of the performance. The best part about the performance is that it is free, but I have heard that they have had an occasional cover charge in place. Fair enough. The cocktails are relatively cheap at £7.50, definitely worth trying. No beer on tap, but plenty of bottles, along with cider and a range of wines. To sum up, SJQ makes for a great evening, and the unique atmosphere will make your trip to Dalston truly memorable. Not to be missed for the world!

Love this bar. Very chilled out, pretty good cocktails(which can take awhile to make so be prepared to wait), and musical acts to keep you entertained downstairs.

THISVENUERULES! Old school underground london at it’s finest. It was named after it’s proximity to the Dalston Jazz Bar(i.e. it’s right behind), and although it doesn’t hold events very often, they are always of a high standard and with a beautiful atmosphere. Imagine walking inot someone’s house, but the house is a place full of fairy lights, strange sculptures made from junk, and kitch artifacts. imagine the sides of the hallway have been removed so that you can peer over to watch the band or the disco happening in the basement. Then walk forwards, buy a lovely cheap cocktail from the hilarious staff, and then walk down the stairs to said basement and PARTY!
