Ryan’s Bar has friendly staff, a nice vibe, and excellent Thai food. They have three cask ales on (all at £3.40 a pint) but all three are bloody awful. I’d rather they didn’t bother. Doom Bar (in theory by the Rock Brewery in Cornwall but actually owned by Molson Coors and tasting like it), Deuchars IPA and Hobgoblin. I was there to see a friend’s band. So I was there long enough to try one of each. All three pints were less than a full pint. All three were not well kept and not well served. No one working behind the bar knows how to pull a pint of ale. Two pulls and a bit is enough to fill a pint. They were like a cheap prositute wanking off a punter. Absolutely THE worse pint of ale I have ever had. And, believe me, I get around a bit. If there’s a band playing there again that I want to see I will stick to the bottled ales and resent paying £4 a bottle.

Decent sized pub with cellar performance space, where i have seen live comedy and live music, so there’s something for everyone, whether you like music or comedy, in a cellar in a pub. The garden is enormous but keeps on being adjusted so may be all concrete by the time you go. There’s meant to be wi’fi but it is as weak as water. You may as well try and pluck the pages from the ether.

This is a fairly pleasant neighbourhood bar. You would not travel any distance to come here but for a those close by it’s a pleasant enough spot.
As other reviewers have noted the Thai food is enjoyable, nicely prepared, though I have been there when the kitchen has been overwhelmed with orders and had to wait a long time for food to arrive. I guess they are doing the best they can in what is probably a fairly minimal kitchen.
There is a garden outback good for those summer evenings. Come and try the place if you are in the area.

Some tasty thai food is produced here most evenings, although they were between chefs last time I popped in. The large garden provides ample seating in the summer, but the arrangement of tables is rather regimented and unimaginative. I suppose it maximises the use of space.
Still, it’s a nice place to meet friends and I’ve supped many a spritzer here on a summer’s day. Although, food seems to be mainly an evening occurrence.
I did try to catch some stand-​up comedy here in the run-​up to the Edinburgh Festival. We waited and waited and eventually they cancelled it, which was disappointing.

I’ve had plenty of good times in Ryan’s Bar. They often have live music or comedy downstairs, mainly for free, and upstairs will find you eating an absolutely ENORMOUS and pretty tasty green curry for about a fiver.
But the best bit of Ryans is the garden — absolutely perfect for sunday afternoon drinking in summer. Has a bit of a tendency to not let you leave for quite a few hours, and you might wind up buying illegal Korean dvds, but you’re guaranteed to bump into friends there.
My only real gripe is that the staff can be surly, especially since they stopped taking cards after they installed one of those horrible cash machines that costs 2 quid to get money out. The nearest cash point is a 10 minute walk away! I think that was pretty cynical of them, and to be honest it’s put me off going in there unless i’m flush.

A little bit of Camden in Stoke Newington.
Ryan’s bar is quite polarising iin the views of people I’ve discussed it with. I’ve had some great nights here, but some people find the rough edges and the punk clothing of some of it’s visitors a little intimidating I guess. It’s a bit like a slightly tamer version of the good mixer in Camden.
Beer here is well priced and it has a range of tellies that show live sport.
Down stairs though attracts very good crowds for live music and I would consider it to be the best venue for this on Church St. The bands I’ve seen have all been either rock or punk and have inspired good reactions in the audiences.

Ryan’s bar serves lagers, good value Thai food, has live music and regular sports, particularly football. There is also a large south-​facing garden with over one hundred seats that gets packed during the summer. It tends to attract the more earthy denizens of Church Street. All in all, Ryan’s is a pretty reliable, unpretentious and, if I’m being honest, unremarkable place to eat, drink, be merry … and catch the premiership.

It is one of my favourite bars because you are sure to have an enjoyable moment.
From live-​sport (Rugby World Cup for exemple) with big screen to live-​music there is always something happening!
During the day, you can have a seat and use the free WI-​FI while you’re drinking an apple juice.
A nice point is the garden reachable by stairs at the back of the place.
People are always warm-​welcome and if you appreciate the atmosphere you can even stay for food as there is a Thai restaurant directly in the bar for who is hungry, just ask for a menu.
Prices for drinks are cheaper than other pubs in the street and the food is delicious.

I really like this bar, particularly in the summer as they have quite a big beer garden. The (Thai) food is quite good and not too expensive and the drinks are average priced for the area.
They often have free comedy and live music on and are a popular Edinburgh Fringe preview venue. They advertise that they have Wi-​Fi but it is not something I have used.
