Really impressed with the Quality Chop House. Read an AA Gill critique a couple of years back who panned it, but a good friend said it was great and it gets decent reviews all over. Food was excellent, the pork chop cooked perfectly, very tasty, crispy, juicey hmmmm. My mum’s skate was superb and the chicken gnocchi a different dish but very good none the less. Menu is small but changes regularly. Agree that the booth seating situation looks great but isn’t particularly comfortable. There were only 3 of us and it wasn’t ideal. Also thought there could’ve been more vegetable side options, a leaf salad, tho very nice wasn’t enough for £3.50. The confit potatoes are a gimme, bloody lovely! The service was excellent, polite, attentive. The lady who served us was a sweetheart and very helpful. £150 for 3 small appetizers, 3 mains, 2 desserts, 2 bottles of wine. Pretty reasonable if you ask me. Not sure it warrants the ££££ status. Would go back but would probably check the menu prior to see if they had anything different. to try!

Not a great experience. The booth seating is extraordinarily uncomfortable, and trying to cram 5 people into one of these is just unpleasant for everyone at the table. Perhaps this is their method for turning over patrons quickly between services? The menu was quite limited, and the paucity of options for sides(some green vegetables, perhaps?) made it a pretty unexciting fare — with everything hinging on the meat. The meat was a single piece of meat(I had the pork chop — must’ve been small pigs, I think). The confit potatoes were nice. That’s about it. All up, for £55 per person, it was about twice the price of what think was reasonable for the quality and quantity of food. The service wasn’t anything to write home about and didn’t rescue what was a below average experience at well-above average prices. Don’t go here. Chart a course around this place and find a nice, pleasant, nearby pub. You’ll not regret it.

I have been meaning to go to Quality Chop House for ages, given its proximity to the City and stellar reputation as one of the top restaurants in London, but for some reason I’ve always ended up much more frequently at the nearby Exmouth Market. I seized on the opportunity to suggest it for drinks and a quick bite after work on Friday, and found that they don’t open until 6PM, but were happy to let us come earlier and enjoy wine and some charcuterie until the kitchen was ready. That was extremely kind and helpful of them, though I can’t believe they are passing on regular business with the after work crowd! We were seated in the wine bar section of the restaurant, which is mostly tables with the exception of a few high stools against the window. My friend and I shared an Albarino white wine from Spain, which was a great easy drinking wine. We ordered a charcuterie plate to share and two small plates each, which ended up being a lot of food! The menu changes daily and that day I had crab crostini and a plate of monkfish liver, both of which were amazing, but the monkfish liver was without a doubt one of the best things I have ever eaten. It had a lovely delicate texture, wasn’t too rich, and was served with watercress and just utterly perfect. I’d love to come back and try more of the menu. If I could be assured of having the monkfish liver on the menu again, I’d bring my friends here and make them all try it, but in the absence of that I’m sure I can keep coming and enjoy the many other great things they have to offer.

Bluffant. Vraiment tout y était. Le service impeccable, les vins exceptionnels, la qualité des ingrédients au top. Nous avons pris en entrée le saumon fumé et le lard de Colonnata: une perfection. En plat, de l’agneau, fondant à souhait, et une quiche/tarte salée d’automne à base de potirons et chanterelles, délicieuse. Et les prix sont raisonnables(en n’oubliant pas qu’on est quand même à Londres ;-)). A recommander sans hésitation !

The only reason I’m giving this restaurant 3 stars is because the food is so delicious. So I feel the need to rate it based on what the chefs cooked up for us. It was beyond excellent. Some of the best meat I’ve ever had. If this rating was only based on food, I would have given it 5 stars. But if I had to rate this place based on service and atmosphere and based on how the wait staff treated us, I’d give it a one star! Let’s begin with the fact that the seats are uncomfortable. That’s not the wait staff’s fault, but not a great start. The wait for the food is horrendous and our waiter was RUDE. Why? We weren’t demanding or impatient. We just wanted dinner, with our family. Who we never get to see. When it didn’t arrive for 50 –60 mins, we made sure to ask about it, only to be greeted with the manager who tried to downplay our wait time and tell us that it wasn’t a long wait at all. He tried to make us feel bad for asking why we had been waiting ages for our food. If you want terrible service with good food, come here. Otherwise, go ANYWHERE else in London with good food and you’ll probably be greeted somebody ten times more polite and intent on you having a nice evening. You can’t cook excellent food and have people who don’t care about it serve it. It will never taste as good as it should when it’s being served to you with a side of bitterness. Will NEVER come back. The amazing food isn’t worth the experience and the rude staff. Bye!

Meat! We stumbled in after a long wander as it was on my bucket list as well as my fellow Unilocaler’s. It’s nice to get this kind of service at a reasonably priced place. They’ll bring the meat boards over to you, go over all the cuts of the day, recommend any sides, etc. We went for one of the larger sharing steaks and split some sides and it was just right. Great atmosphere as well. Excellent value for money and a nice little gem tucked away at the end of Exmouth Market.

We came here with friends and it was a really wonderful experience. The restaurant was very busy and on a Friday night we had to put our name in and wait, finally eating after 10pm! But, it was completely worthwhile. The food was excellent and the service very good, too. We chose a set menu. I have some food allergies and they were very accommodating. It was expensive, but the food appeared to be high quality, prepared properly, and served with flare and tasted great. I’d recommend this, but be prepared to wait and spend quite a lot.

The current incarnation of this historic restaurant was opened at the end of 2012 by the son of Jancis Robinson(a wine critic) and Nick Lander(restauranteur and critic). This struck me as a positive sign although it has taken me almost a year to pay a visit at lunch today. The Chop House is split into two rooms, one operating as the primary dining room, the other as a wine bar/shop(with food). We opted for the dining room which still retains all of the character of this restaurant with an original tiles black/white checkered floor and fixed benches/tables along both walls. The menu read extremely well, offering a St. John-esque take on British food and featuring no less than 3 game based main courses at lunch today. True to its roots, a daily lunchtime chop is also available if you are so inclined. I opted for the venison which was perfectly cooked and presented cutely on old fashioned crockery. My companion’s pheasant looked equally good and was served traditionally with bread sauce and all the trimmings. I was most jealous! The evening menu is a 4 course £35 no choice affair and looked to be great value. One to check out soon. Wine lovers are unlikely to be disappointed by the eclectic selection and generous corkage(a flat £10 which encourages you to buy something further down the list price wise). There is also a number of older rarer bottles available(albeit at a higher price). One of these rare bottles is opened each evening using the Coravin(Google it) pourer and sold by the glass. This must be one of the nicest ways to experience fine wine in London. So, why not 5 stars? Well the traditional benches and tables are not the most comfortable. This is not a massive gripe but it meant I didn’t feel like a place to linger. That said, I am already thinking about my return visit!

This landmark restaurant, dating back to the 1870s, is off the beaten path but worth seeking out for its traditional British cuisine. We happened to come here on a Monday night, when the steak and kidney pie with creamy mashed potatoes is only £5 instead of the usual £13.95. What a bargain! My husband ordered the battered cod fish, which was served with mushy peas, chips, and a delectable tartare sauce and priced at £14.95. For dessert we had rum and raisin cheesecake and rice pudding with apricot jam, priced at £5.25 each(more than my entrée!). With a couple of beers, two espressos, and service, our tab came to £50. The owners are to be commended for retaining many of the original fittings when the resturant was refurbished, and Alice will be happy to know the hard oak benches now are covered with padding.

The only reason I didn’t give this 5 was because the seats are SO incredibly uncomfortable. I know that they are original features of the chop house, but they are so thin and hard that it makes sitting there for any great length of time, a very unpleasant experience. Apart from the seating, The Chop House is great. The food is delicious– a traditional English menu consisting of excellent cuts of meat, pies and sausages. The desserts are also incredible– I recently tried their eton mess and sticky toffee pudding which were both delicious. The décor is beautiful– they have retained the original interior from when the building was used as a late nineteenth century working-class chop houses.

We came here for a little nosh before a performance at the theatre recently. My friend gave me the heads up and I was pretty excited to try some uncomplicated and old fashioned British grub as it seems to have fallen by the wayside in favour celebrity chef reincarnations. The restaurant, one of the few 19th century chophouses left surviving, has kept all of its simple refectory charm with black and white square tiles and wooden booths intact, somewhere you can still picture the Kray brothers hatching their next plan over bangers and mash. I myself had some good old fashioned corned beef hash with fried egg: some may find this a rather unsophisticated dish but I can confirm it was rather delicious. So was the sticky toffee pudding. There are sprinklings of modern cuisine here and there but for the most part the food really does hark back to the good old yesteryear. There’s also good range of French and New World wines to make you feel a little more discerning.
