Sweetmeats are delicious but service is terrible ie I ordered a basket of various sweets for my nephews wedding and was shown the one on display which was covered in sellophane, ribbons and bows… the price of which was £30.00. After paying for it, I ordered for it to be ready for Friday at 4pm the owner handled the transaction. I arrived at 4pm to collect the basket and after waiting about 20 minutes a basket covered in cling film was presented to me… I explained that this was not what I ordered and it should have ribbons and bows and covered in sellophane. I was rudely told by staff that if I wanted that it will be an extra charge of £5.00 and also as they were so busy I would have to wait. I was tempted to just leave it but then took it home and wrapped it myself. What a waste of time and money

Pooja’s brightly lit white tile and chrome interior showcases oh so many tiny tasty things made of pastry. There are stacks, pyramids, rows and piles of the things to gorge your eyes upon. A veritable treasure trove of Indian savoury dumplings/pastries/parcels/rolls(all veggie), baklava and Indian cakes. Then there are the achingly sweet and brightly coloured Indian sweets, just as abundant and thrilling to look at. Business is always booming when I go in, and it is a bit intimidating because I am completely ignorant of what it is that’s on offer, and I’ve had to decide quick because I am in a queue. But the staff are always happy to recommend things, and it’s fun to just go with it and get a paper bag filled with New Things To Try. I haven’t had a dud item yet, and although the pricing is a mystery as I’ve yet to spot any labels, it seems to end up being cheap.

So cheap it is crazy! Excellent and unusual Indian food — not only sweets, but great chaats, curries, samosas etc etc.

This is a true gem. I first went there for their sweets, but now I go back every week to get their savouries: chaat, curry, and all the starters. This is all proper South Indian vegetarian food, fresh and cheap — not your usual takeaway!

I had spied Pooja while driving through Tooting recently and returned to gaze through the window at the wonderous assortment of Indian sweets and savouries on offer. I love trying new tastes and the row upon row of unknown goodies was too tempting to pass up. Business was brisk this Saturday but the staff were patient enough to recommend things. I have more of a savoury tooth and ended up with bags of 3 different types of gathia, lovely crunchy noodle-shaped snacks. I also had some chum chums and gulaab jamun, both recommended and yummy if a little sweet. A treasure trove whether or not you’re familiar with Indian sweets and savouries.

Choosing a path of vegetarianism has the potential to be a little boring on the culinary side of things. Entering Pooja will provide you with a world of tasty options though: it’s a place with a wonderful smell and all sorts of Indian foods and sweets. Everything is completely vegetarian, though not vegan. evident in their egg-less cakes. So if you have a lively Indian wedding to cater for, or a Bollywood themed party, Pooja is your one stop shop. Everything is completely authentic and very well-priced, and for your enjoyment, they have a complete on-line ordering system too which includes a delivery service to your home address.

As a child gowing up on the shores of the Indian Ocean, the food from Pooja was what I grew up with. This place is a triumph of ‘good taste’, in the truest sense of that expression! The range of foods can seem bewildering at first, but fear not. Ask the staff, they might seem hassled but they really don’t bite and are in fact really happy to tell you all about the food, offer samples and make recommendations. On one occasion I remember being there and hearing one of the staff conduct three transactions simultaneously, and very politely and nicely, in English, Gujarati and German. .. . some feat! You’ll find familiar savouries like Samosa here(only Vegetarian food here as this is a Gujarati Brahmin owned business) but three different types, with onion, without onion, or Punjabi; this distinction matters to Orthodox Hindus and Jains in particular, or even people who just don’t like onions. Other savouries include at least six different types of Chevda(commonly referred to as ‘Bombay Mix’ by some), puris, sev, pakora, halva and a myriad other ingenious constructions from gram flour(made from chick peas) and spices and water either steamed or fried. They even construct Bhel Poori — a mix of puri, spiced yoghurt, chick peas, sev, tangy tamarind, coriander leaves, nuts and spices. The sweet counter is a wonder to behold. A myriad of colours, from pale cream, through yellows and light greens to vivid reds and oranges heralds a vast range of Indian sweets(or Halwai) that you’d find hard to beat. Some, the more refined sort, are topped with silver or gold leaf — yes, real gold and silver. In the main, these sweets are made from milk leavened with ground nuts and soft, sweet spices like cardamom, cinammon or clove. Other sweets come drenched in rose syrup which is almost heady in its fragrance and flavour. If you ever get the chance to go to Tooting, please do try to make Pooja one of your destinations, if only to find out what real Indian food tastes like. On the same strip you’ll also find some great vegetarian Indian restaurants like Kastoori and North Indian(meat eaters note!) restaurants like Mirch Masala — all excellent.

A great indian sweet shop to visit in the heart of tooting! It has over 100 varieties of both Sweets and Savouries on the menu and the list is growing as Pooja try to cater to all their customers unique requests. Its Sweets are made using Pure Butter Ghee, Milk Products and Khoya. If you want to try real delicious indian desserts(especially those with a sweet tooth) I recommend to visit this place, you’ll become hooked, guranteed, lol. Prices varies but are reasonable.
