Hipster gin heaven. My wife and I stumbled across this place while looking for a quiet drink after a noisy tapas dinner up the street. The barebones lunch counter style of the pie shop lends itself well to the DIY setup of the after-hours gin joint: it feels more like an actual speakeasy than the swanky plush places hidden through phone booths and in back rooms of fancy hotels. I’m pretty sure all they do is light some candles, put up a sign, and break out the gin. And boy, do they break it out. Two full sides of an A4-size menu are covered with different gin styles, formulations, and cocktails. I’m far from a gin expert, but I was intrigued by all the different botanicals and mixtures on offer. The bartending staff seemed a little disorganized, but they were pleasant and got the job done. And I’m not clear on whether credit cards were accepted, but the drinks are quite reasonably priced given the top-shelf and esoteric names they were using, so we had enough cash for a round or two. And the drinks we got were generously sized, too. Overall, it’s not quite a 5-star experience, as it’s all a little slapdash, but it’s definitely a fun place to stop in for a drink… so long as you like your gin. And even if you think you don’t, I would go try some — they’ve got enough variety to suit most tastes.

After the F. Cooke Pie & Mash shop closes its doors to those wanting eels and mash, the lovely ladies of Peter’s and Co come in and transform this little shop into a gin palace complete with candles, tunes, snack boards and yes… lots of gin. Reasonable gin at that! I had every intention of going through the menu and being adventurous but when I asked the bartender which was her favourite, she answered with Sipsmith and it was just meant to be. So thus, I stayed on sipsmith g+ts at a reasonable £5 each. My drinking partner for the evening powered through a few mainly picked by name. The shop itself is a really cool spot with the lights turned off. The heft of the marble, the condiments about, you feel like you’re with your friends skipping out on something you were meant to be at and instead crashing a business and throwing an impromptu party. We were there really early on a Friday night and it was pretty relaxed, I’d definitely go back, the staff were lovely, I hope they keep this popup a permanent fixture on the market. Only open from 7−12÷1 on Thurs-Sat. Watch out for ghosts.
