The most pubby pub in the area, with a great mixed crowd of people. Old people, students, lots of locals. This a place to come and booze with your friends. It has bags of atmosphere, a jukebox with all of the songs, a pool table that you can sometimes get on and reasonably priced beer. No exciting beer, but quite good Guinness and the usual lagers, a cider and Doom Bar. I don’t think they do food… go for some Chinese across the road.

Traditional pub, Irish(shows hurling and horseracing) but not ‘Oirish’(no giant Guinness hats). Reasonably priced with pints still below £4. Visited on a Saturday when it was fairly busy with a mixed crowd of locals and students, old and young.

I like this place for nostalgia’s sake and not for much more. Apart from holding the title of the only accessible(maybe) pool table on the New Cross strip, the only reason to come here is the price of drinks. The selection is standard pub fare. Carling, Fosters, Pride etc. And of course Guiness. I suppose that’s another reason I still go there really. Being an Irish pub Guiness is a given, but apart from that the place feels very mismatched. more like an old person’s living room. There’s a Kangaroo’s head on one wall and a picture of someone doing Karate on another. There’s always awful old pop music on and horse racing in the background. It’s mad. But I can see how other people could misread these as bad things…

The Marquis is an old mans pub. Traditional exterior, traditional interior. Meaning: bar stools, patterned carpet and musty smell. As an Irish pub, it serves a good Guinness, has a great selection of ales, beers and whiskeys. It’s the only place I know to play entire albums of Johnny Cash and be able to get away with it. If you are a person of simple needs, this is the place for you. Nice Quiet Pint with Personality.

What is there to say about this pub? Apart from the students hanging out here, this pub does only one thing; it doesn’t really do anything. There’s an average selection of wine and spirits, beer on tap, pool table, jukebox, sticky brown tables, OK food, slot machines and old regulars at the bar. This is pretty much as ‘normal’ as pubs come. It doesn’t do anything wrong or bad, it just doesn’t do anything else. The students flock here when an event is on at Goldsmiths or to get a cheap quiet pint without having to go to a more ‘studenty’ bar or pub in the area. For the older gents and ladies who live local and want a fairly priced pint in a classic British pub setting along New Cross Road, this is the place.

Given that this is actually an Irish pub and owned by an Irish family, I’m rather fond of it. I also like it since the barman made me a hot toddy and was the first barman in this country to actually know what I meant when I asked for it! It’s comfy and there’s a pool table for those so inclined. All you need in a pub really.

I managed the cinema on the opposite side of the road back in the early 60’s and The Marquis was a natural down to earth watering hole, my organist always bought me a pint on his wedding anniversary around August his marriage was in wartime and lasted just one weekend but he still celebrated the day, I would love to call in for a pint but unfortunately Brisbane is just over 12,000 miles away so if you are ever in the neighbourhood have one for me.

Decent bar that’ll show any Irish matches going; traditional pub otherwise, friendly staff and a bit of banter with the locals!

so, you are in the New Cross area and you are looking for a nice place to have a pint with your mum? Well, dont come here. However, if you are looking for a cheap, low down place to drink till you can’t remember why you were drinking in the first place? Well, then, mate, this is the place for you and me! Good location, but no food and great for a typical English pub.

A very old school pub in the heart of New Cross. The Marquis of Granby is a nice old pub that stays true to it’s traditional roots. Order a pint, relax with friends over a drink, general pub lark is the order of the day here. You’ll get not much more nor less but in that lies it’s charm. Also notable for keeping Addlestone’s cider on draught, which if you’ve read any of my other reviews, you’ll notice a trend in me appreciating. There are plenty of busier, younger venues nearby so it’s also a good meeting point for a long night out.

I was struggling to work out how many stars to give this place. I have been a few times and, apart from the pool table, couldn’t think of any distinguishing features. Although it doesn’t offer anything special, it doesn’t do anything wrong. It ticks all the boxes for what it offers: beer, pool, juke box, toasted sandwiches So I plumped for an average 3*, which is what this place is. I’ll go back though and have my low expectations resoundingly met.
