Lutyens and Rubinstein is a wonderful independent bookshop on Kensington Park Road, near the junction with Elgin Crescent, about ten minutes’ walk from Notting Hill Gate tube station. Although it is not a large shop, the owners have managed to cram in an eclectic selection of books, both contemporary and classic, with an emphasis on the twentieth century, and can order in any book currently in print but not in stock, within 24 hours. They are arranged in alphabetical order rather than by subject, although children’s books, large illustrated books and poetry have their own separate shelves. The lovely owners and their assistants are happy to make(and receive) recommendations. Delicious coffee, tea(and sometimes biscuits) are available downstairs for a minimal charge and the shop also sells framed linocuts, cards and a quirky range of perfumes. Well worth the detour.
