A bit pricey but you should bear in your mind that its superb location!!! everything could be too perfect apart from price. sweets, savoury, whatever you grab for drinks(even if they use Monmouth coffee, its going to be under your expectation, sorry for being honest.) with choice of dairy type you fancy– milk, soy, almond just name it. the atmosphere is fantastic but small enough to be busy at all times ;) been here with my friend for brunching and coffeeing, paid £22 for two brunch plates and 2 coffees.

I don’t normally write reviews but can’t refrain on this occasion. I walked into the café today and to say it was busy is an exaggeration-a few people outside and two guests inside. There was one barista making coffee, and two other female staff talking. I stood there for about 10 minutes without anybody acknowledging there was a customer-neither the two women talking not the male barista. I would’ve happily waited had they told me they’d be right with me but leaving somebody stand there for even 5 minutes is quite rude. I have worked in a coffee shop before and this would’ve never been allowed to happen. Needless to say I left — I can spend my money elsewhere where staff actually care about their guests. And there is no chance in hell I’ll ever be back…

Uuuummm, it’s just ok. Off the beaten path up Portobello a little ways, this hole-in-the-wall is so small, that breakfast is served from a hot plate behind the counter, because there is no space for a kitchen downstairs or in the back. We went early(read: before 10:00) one crisp, autumn, Saturday morning and found there to be a wait inside – there are only a handful of tables. We opted to take a seat outside next to a very hungover threesome of twenty-somethings. We waited ages for coffee that was lukewarm by the time it arrived. My husband’s espresso was burnt. With two women working, the service was extremely slow. You must order at the counter, and make sure you have cash, because they don’t take cards. We both had the eggs benedict, although it’s called something different. Theirs is made with an avocado hollandaise, that gives the dish a jaunty hit of color. Considering the setup, the food was done pretty well. However, it, too was a tad cold by the time it came to us. Because of it’s locale, it’s not as pricey as many of the other morning places in Notting Hill, which is a big plus. However, I’d have to say I’m not likely to go out of my way to come back when I could pay a little more and walk a little less. Yep, I’m a lazy American like that.

Seriously cute little café on Portobello Road, up where it’s a bit quieter and not quite so overrun with London souvenir shoppers. Here’s why I like Lowry & Baker. 1. They have an ampersand in their name. I appreciate ampersands. 2. They serve Monmouth coffee! I also appreciate good coffee. 3. Cute and casual setup with a bunch of mismatched chairs and tables, a basic island/counter for preparing food and a regular kitchen stove in the wall. It’s kind of like walking into your friend’s kitchen, if your friend were willing to make you a wide range of breakfast items, sandwiches, and specials on command. I need a friend like this. 4. Tasty homemade food, prepared right in front of you. I had a pesto goat cheese panini with a side salad of greens and sunflower seeds for £4, but had a tough time choosing between homemade quiche and a goat curd, fig and honey sandwich. Life is hard. 5. The bathroom is tiled with mirrors and has a sewing machine. It’s simultaneously a bit Studio 54/your mum’s closet. 6. They have a frequent buyer wall constructed of Polaroid pictures with stickers. I appreciate creative loyalty schemes(see Tina, We Salute You) and even dis-loyalty schemes(see Prufrock Coffee at Present in Shoreditch). 7. To top it all of… FREEWI-FI. I ALWAYS appreciate free wi-fi. Thanks Lowry & Baker. I am very much appreciative of your existence.

I love this end of Portobello Road. The area at the junction with Golborne Road has an almost villlage-y feel to it and Lowry & Baker fits right in. I often take a stroll down the market in my lunch hour but usually just pick up a snack to take back to the office. When a friend suggested to meet for a coffee today I was glad to know just the place — we loved it so much we stayed for a piece of delicious homemade cake. BTW I had the daily salad option for lunch which today was a yummy couscous salad sprinkled with pomegranade seeds. Other options included cold and toasted sandwiches — I am sure I will eat my way through the whole menu by the end of the year … Everything is served on crockery borrowed from Grandma’s kitchen — love it!

One of the most charming and friendly cafes I’ve had the pleasure of visiting. If I’m ever on Portobello Road I make a point of stopping here. The coffee is truly divine, they cater for the fanatics. It’s a Monmouth blend and I’ve not had better this side of London. It’s beautifully done out, too. Whoever’s behind it must be a real talent. The bathroom is a sight to behold. But most of all you come you here for the food. Homemade egg mayonnaise! Bacon and avocado sandwiches! And they always seem to be bringing out delightful little cakes.
