Lord of the Dance

I can sum up Lord of the Dance in five words: Irish dancing Las Vegas style! It is by far the most cheesy dance show I’ve ever seen and could ever imagine. Let me set the scene for you… the backdrop to the stage is a massive screen with impressive high-​definition lighting that was often more transfixing to me than the dancing — there were unicorns, waterfalls, rainbows, fireworks on display and even a mother horse with her foal strolling across the screen. The Lord himself was full of charisma and oozing with confidence, regularly flirting with the audience and asking for more applause. There was a contortionist little girl who did a good job of acting the innocent little spirit of the show. There was singing in between the dancing and violin playing too. I do however get the distinct feeling that at least some bits of the music playing and tap-​dancing were mimed. Tapping into conventional sex-​appeal the show also has dancing girls wagging their buttocks and tap-​dancing guys taking their tops off; something for everyone then.
Whilst I found the total and utter cheese-​fest unintentionally comical, I cannot deny that the synchronised tap and ballet dancing was world-​class and impactful. The music and beats were uplifting and lent themselves well to the dancing whilst the different sparkly, electronic, tight-​fighting or half-​naked costumes were also a delightful addition.
The cast consisted of a large group of male and female dancers as well as a female singer and two female violinists. There were some dips in energy during the singing and solo dance performances and the first half of the show was not as well constructed as the second half but overall the Lord of the Dance did command the stage well, made spectacular use of the big screen, and certainly did wonders with Irish dancing.
