The Lamb Tavern is a historic Young’s pub situated in the stunning Victorian covered Leadenhall Market down the road from Liverpool Street railway station heading towards the Thames. This is a very grand location indeed, and has featured in Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone film. However, the location it is also a negative too. Leadenhall Market is situated in the City of London, and makes for an ideal venue for the suits from the offices to descend upon after office hours. I have only visited the Lamb Tavern on a Friday evening, and obviously it is packed! On the plus side, there is plenty of space outside in the market to spill out into, and the ambience here is equally as good as in the pub itself! Food is served in the Lamb Tavern, but I believe it is expensive and have not indulged myself! Worth a visit for the location itself!

The pub scene downstairs was a madhouse, but thankfully I was there for dinner, not the pints. Service was friendly, and I ordered the venison pie. The table got the scotch eggs with wild boar for starters. Yet another meal in London that should come with a coupon for a free angioplasty.

I had some pints with colleagues before heading upstairs at Lamb Tavern for a quick, convenient pub dinner. Being the American I am and not having many fish ‘n chip options in the States, I opted for that traditional dish. While I lived in London I had a favorite fish ‘n chips shop so I was worried that it would be a tough comparison, but Lamb Tavern didn’t disappoint. The fish wasn’t too greasy and the chips were nice and crisp on the outside. The atmosphere is probably the tavern’s best asset. It feels very old and very British. The feeling in Leadenhall Market is lovely on any day(as it’s covered and protected by rain). If you’ve had one too many down on the street and need some decent pub food to soak up the alcohol, head upstairs to Lamb Tavern. While it does feel a little touristy, the food was much better than expected!

It’s your average British pub, made cooler only by the fact that it is in the architecturally unique Leadenhall Market, and that the exterior was featured in a Harry Potter movie. It looms in the shadow of Lloyd’s and is full of people in suits who want a drink or 12 after work. It’s fun to be able to get a drink and stand outside. Because it’s covered, the rainy London weather won’t ruin your experience. If you prefer to be inside, the upstairs is far nicer than the downstairs area, and less crowded. I would definitely go back, and think it’s a good stop for tourists. Take your pictures, have a beer, check out Leadenhall Market and Lloyd’s, and move on to the next stop.

And I thought liquid lunches were dead Snug inside the historic Leadenhall Market, this Square Mile pub dates back to the 18th Century. It’s pleasantly old-fashioned and retains some of its Victorian touches. There’re no gimmicks, no TV, making it feel more like a good old-fashioned City pub. Maybe it just hasn’t bowed to pressure from wealthy clientele? And believe me there’s money here. Upstairs food’s traditionally British, and main courses range from around £12 for salads to a £22.50 T-bone steak. There’s not much for veggies to choose from, and everything’s garnished with a 12.5% service charge. For lighter pub bites and a pint or two then downstairs is the place for you. But it was upstairs for us. We hadn’t booked, but they managed to fit us in and once settled we opted for Lamb chops(what else) and fish and chips with a glass of wine and bottle of water. All in, it cost £50 with the service charge. This pub undoubtedly has one of the most spectacular spots of the whole City and gets busy at lunch. Staff seemed pleasant enough and the food was on the better than average side. Most of the punters were business suited though(as you’d expect in Bankerland), so me in my torn jeans and dirty kagool kinda stuck out like a sore thumb :/

So so busy, too busy, unbearably busy,.but if you can get beyond the crowds then you might be able to get your hands on a Youngs or Youngs Special. That’s a vaguely worthwhile goal, they were not bad.

After a pint or two at the Hoop and Grapes, our hearty band decided to hit the historic Lamb Tavern in Leadenhall market, at about 6pm on a weeknight. It’s adjacent to the large Lloyds of London building, so no surprise it was absolutely packed inside with insurers and underwriters, plus there were a hundred or so more standing outside on the cobblestones, with pints in hand. We stood outside as well. Not that I minded that much — this market area is where they filmed some of the exterior scenes for Diagon Alley(of Harry Potter fame) so it was somewhat picturesque. Plus it was a nice night, and we got our pints quickly enough. But it was a short stop; our stomachs were grumbling, so we headed off to fill them with something besides beer.

This place was cool. It’s also in Leadenhall Market, where the scenes for Diagon Alley in the Harry Potter films were shot — so I find it extra cool. It’s a very oldy worldy pub and has a selection of ales to match. Situated in the heart of the City you’ll also be surrounded by bankers — not sure how some would feel about that.

It’s there, it’s fine, it’s a Young’s pub with a couple of decent real ales and a wide range of lagers. If you work in this bit of the City it’s not a bad place to wander off to for a pint or seven after work, particularly if it’s raining, but there are a thousand better places if the sun’s out… or even if it’s not. You’ll likely be here before long. It’ll get the job done.

Iconic city institution in Leadenhall Market, frequented by City-folk and tourists alike. Ordr a pint of ‘Ordinary’(Youngs) and savour the atmosphere, which gets progressively loud as the lunchtime wears on. Top floor serves hearty sandwiches; meat, bread and sauce yourself! Uninspired, very unpretentious and expensive, so gourmets avoid. Should you visit, check out the historical photos: there are several of royalty visiting and one of John Wayne, who shot a famous fight scene from the film ‘Brannigan’ in the pub! Well worth a visit, if only to take in the tradition.

The quintessential post-work, old-school City drinking spot. And despite the fact that the pub is actually quite nice, chances are you won’t really notice because you are actually stood outside(probably in icy cold) in the covered market holding onto your pint. But the atmosphere is great-jovial and convivial; and even though every last person there is a City-worker(beleaguered souls that they are these days) I’ve never seen any oafish-ness. And if you happen to be passing through at lunchtimes, they do these great meat sandwiches– just bread and meat, and condiment. Hearty.

Leadenhall Market is quite a cool little haven off the Masters of the Universe banking streets. And at its heart is the Lamb Tavern. Not everything I’d hope for in a pub: the beer is dead dear(ok, i’m in the city), and the clientele are all wearing suits, but they aren’t such a bad bunch, if a little loud. I did notice that the place was filling up from about 4.30 — I guess when the stock markets are crashing and you can’t short anymore, why not go down the pub?! Its good to know where my taxes are going.
