I really wanted to try this place out as according to my research, it’s the only Austrian eatery in London! So I looked up the location and me and my mate went to try this place out one day. It was a little tricky to find but we managed to find it eventually! I was at first disappointed to discover how small it was(hence why I’ve given this place a 4 star rating). We had to wait for seating for a while, otherwise you could easily take the food away. However, we found virtue in our patience and eventually got us a table! Now, I don’t exactly remember the names of what we ordered but since everything was new to me, I ordered a bit of everything! I recall having a winter warming soup, sandwich AND a naughty sweet snack after. I absolutely loved every bit of it, even if it meant my belly having to hang out for the rest of the afternoon! The staff were really friendly too, which is always nice. The cherry on top must be the selection of Austrian products on sell too, from snacks to cook books, so even if you don’t wish to have something there and then, you can always bring some home and enjoy on another day!

What a great find! Your best bet for Austrian food in Clerkenwell/Barbican. A perfect lunch spot for those seeking a change from the monotony of sandwich shops. I was very happy with my spicy sausage and my salmon sandwich that was served on a bretzel. Although I did not try, the soups(especially the goulash) smelled amazing. And yes, the do have sacher torte! The place is spotless but tiny(maybe 5 tables max), so be prepared to order take-away. Nice selection of Austrian deli products too…

Fancy a trip to Austria, where you get served such weird-sounding coffee drinks as «Großer Brauner»(Big Brown One) or «Mélange»? — Well, you don’t actually have to waste your time flying crappy Austrian Airlines to Vienna(sorry for this snappy comment, but I just recently«enjoyed» this airline and wasn’t at all impressed). You can simply go to «Kipferl» and enjoy a slice of Austrian culture and vivacity right here in London! What I like about Kipferl is that the people who work here are actually«native Austrians» and on every one of my visits I have received a very warm welcome. I also like that at Kipferl, the interior is laid out in such way that you can sit down and actually want to stay and have a good conversation!(The nice wooden interior radiates a warmth that is really hard to find in grey London.) Further, their food selection is very down-to-earth; nothing fancy, but good and tasty food! I can personally highly recommend the«Topfenkuchen»(Cheesecake). Also, when they serve you the coffee drink, they present this on a tray, accompanied by a glass of water and little Milka Chocolate… nice touch! Oh, and they also offer a nice selection of typical Austrian food items: hams, sausages, chocolates, breads etc.

Miriam: Let’s go to that Austrian deli… Uli: Kipferl! Laura: Gesundheit! Now where do you want to go, Miriam? Turns out Uli wasn’t sneezing, but in fact the Austrian deli that Miriam spoke of was Kipferl. My bad. This tiny authentic Austrian delicatessen, yes, I did say Austrian delicatessen, must elicit for Austrian ex-pats the emotions I would feel if they opened an In-N-Out in London: PURE. JOY. Not only was it a complete sausage fest in there, but it was an open faced sandwich lover’s dream come true! And though I didn’t indulge in the potato salad, the red cabbage and brie, or the ham and cheese bretzel that my friends noshed on, I’ve since been back for lots of fantastic coffee and a slice of sachertorte or ten(Translation: super healthy vegetables. Or maybe Viennese chocolate cake, I can never remember.) Go get Austrian with your bad self!

It’s a rainy Wednesday morning and I’m sat drinking a disappointing cup of Starbucks filter and dreaming about the coffee I had yesterday from Kipferl. The fact I can’t even pronounce this place makes me love it that little bit more. Yesterday afternoon my mind was opened to the concept of a chocolate and apricot cake with a coffee so beautifully smooth and rich it slipped down my throat. I’m in love with Austria. Actually, I think I’m having a European love affair. Go here for the novelty and stay for the coffee. It’s one of the most beautiful cups I’ve had in my life.

I have been to Austria. It is beautiful, stately and very precise. Kipferl is a bit like that. It stocks a whole range of Austrian food but lets move right past that and get to the important things… the pastrys and the coffee. When you have a coffee in Kipferl you buy into part of Austria. You get a perfectly formed coffee, a small glass of water, a chocolate and a tray. And you get to eat it in a lovely little deli. It is precise, it is pretty, it is a bit like Austria. Couple that with some moreish Austrian pastrys which go elegantly with coffee and you have a great little shop.

This wonderful shop specializes in Austrian sausage, cheese, bread, sauerkraut, mustard, wine, beer, and sweets as well as prepared foods like an extraordinary liver dumpling soup. You can purchase made-to-order sandwiches and salads in the café or bring home the ingredients to make your own. If you have a sweet tooth treat yourself to the sensational apfelkuchen or the flourless poppyseed cake with walnuts and chocolate.

Kipferl is the only Austrian deli I’ve come across in London and it’s well worth seeking out. They sell great fresh food and there’s also a little café area that is very cosy. I’m not really a fan of Austrian open sandwiches, I remember seeing them for the first time in Vienna and thinking where’s the rest?! But they’re so delicious from here that I’ve even converted to the strange topless creations. I’ve also bought some lovely organic mountain cheese and Austrian sausage from the chilled cabinet. They also have a selection of traditional cakes, pastries and cookies. If you have a sweet tooth you must try the wacky Zotter chocolate bars that come in flavours such as Lemon Curd and Caramelised Bacon Bits. If you feel like relaxing in a warm and friendly atmosphere then stop by for the café, where the guy serving(who is like a picture book jolly Austrian man in breeches) is very welcoming and happily relates the specials to you. The Hungarian goulash soup is particularly good and with a big hunk of rye bread really hits the spot. The prices are very reasonable too, you can have a platter of meat and cheeses for only£6.50. If you’re not familiar with Austrian food then I recommend you come here to experience some of the best.
