I’m afraid I can’t share in the previous reviewer’s enthusiasm of this place. I like nuts, I like nuts a lot and I too was impressed by their selection. And the prospect of a few hot nuts. It was greed and an over emphasized hunger that got us through the door pre Homebase shop-a-thon. As tends to be the case, we wanted different things. They sell things by the bag I recall and we wanted a mixed bag of salted almonds and cashews Much to our surprise the shop keeper refused us this telling us rudely that we could not mix the nuts. Well! We were startled. If he’d explained it had something to do with the delicate flavour of the nuts and hence the risk of taste tainting should they be mixed, we may have accepted, indeed encouraged this rule. But no, no explanation was offered but only a firm refusal when we tried a second time our feminine charm turned up to full, to ask for a mixed bag. I also think the name lacks originality. So there. Granted, the nuts were good.

A great little find opposite the massive chain stores at the north-east tip of Finsbury Park. Hot Nuts sells a variety of raw and toasted nuts. My favourites are the honey almonds and cashews. The shop also sell all manner of other dried fruits, berries and seeds. Some are sold from a table with heated drawers in the window. Others are sold from giant, standing sacks. You pay per 100g, although they will probably give you a discount if you want bigger quantities. There are also a bewildering array of other random products lining the shelves — fizzy drinks, Raki, tins of chickpeas. As long as you look confused upon entry, which is pretty much guaranteed the first time, the assistant will scoop up a few nuts for you to try for free with a smile. I find the service better in this Green Lanes outlet than in the newer site in Kingsland Shopping Centre, or in the shop on Kingsland Road(now closed).

If you’re stuck waiting for a bus on Green Lanes in the rain, waiting for a bus in the sun or sitting in your flat doing nothing, go to Hot Nuts and not only have a mini tasting session(the more excited you are about the nuts on offer the more nuts they’ll let you try) but also buy yourself some extremely tasty hot nuts. All nuts are kept in large heated containers and they’re all quite out of the ordinary flavours. If it’s chilli you’re after, honey roasted or salted they will have something to suit your taste bud needs. I love this shop — in fact I want to go there now. Mmmm the thought makes my tongue tingle.
