Found this place on Unilocal and I’ve been making the pilgrimage from Brixton ever since(not that Brixton doesn’t have a sizeable dollop of nice cafés, it’s just good to have options). They do a nice flat white, and a buttery and very inexpensive flapjack(a mere 80p!). I always seem to be surprised at how cheap the bill is. Haven’t tried the sandwiches or breakfast, but as a place to camp out with a coffee and a treat its worth the trek. Bog windows, lots of light, high ceilings, wood floors, no sense that you’ll be asked to move along. Love it.

House is a not-for-profit café-cum-gallery, which is the kind of thing that should always have existed in an area as rife with art student types as Camberwell. You can get a «Camberwell Crush» smoothie here(that’s apple, banana and strawberries, in case you’re wondering), a decent and keenly priced coffee and very reasonable cakes and croissants. Nice and friendly, unpretentious atmosphere. Lots to support about House!

House hit the headlines this week for their illicit Olympics window display — five large bagels(baked in Camberwell’s fantastic Sophocles Bakery) arranged in the shape of the Olympic rings. This apparently caused a real fuss with the Olympic brand police, but it had the bonus of getting House some nationwide free publicity. A sucker for an exciting local story, I immediately paid House a visit, and I’m glad they faced the wrath of Lord Coe because otherwise I might never have gone to this delightful café(I probably would have done at some point — it’s pretty near my house.) I’m glad I visited, because House is a small but charming café serving excellent coffee, a large selection of doorstep sandwiches and baked treats with free wi-fi, friendly staff and a charming garden out back. This area is not short on cute, causal cafes, but House really feels like a community hub — one wall is plastered with help wanted ads, posters for local art exhibitions and other community events. The clientele also gave this impression — a nice mix of art school kids, older people enjoying a cup of tea and laptoppers soaking up the wi-fi.

This is a small, cosy café. They have a small seating area with sofas, which makes it a nice place to relax with a coffee and a good friend. The menu is healthy and delicious and they offer quite unique sandwich filling combinations, as well as homemade cakes and biscuits. They make food fresh to order. In the basement, they have a gallery, which I didn’t look at when I went in as I didn’t have time. This place has quite a personal and unique feel to it. They could do with a little bit more seating space, but then it wasn’t particularly busy when I went in on a Saturday lunch time.

House is a café above a small gallery in Camberwell and a venue in its own right. It is everything I like café to be: great tea in charming mugs, delicious homemade cakes, comfy mismatched seats, wireless internet and friendly staff. Added to that it’s cheap — £1 for a cup of tea and less than £2 for a coffee. The best thing about House is its style, which is kind of expected considering its arty premises. The green globe lights, whitewashed walls and wooden floors give it a bright and airy feel that one normally associates with a gallery. It’s a calming space that is great for sitting and working, much like I am doing now! The art from downstairs often creeps upstairs and there are colouring pencils and paper on offer if you feel inspired to create! Breakfast, sandwiches and salads are all on offer as well as a great selection of teas and coffees. I recommend the strawberry milkshake.

Gallery+Café= House. Art+Food= Spaceships. Left+Right = Infinity. From the moment I saw the window filled with Styrofoam cups struck up from string — Styrofoam cups with little fanged faces drawn on them in marker — I was a fan. An ivory brisee fan, to be exact, from Germany, very useful for making small winds in the hot summer months. I love art. I love cozy cafes and all that they entail(coffee, tea, hot chocolate, little baked goods, yummy sandwiches). Put the two together, and you’ve got a winner in my mind. Entry level floor café, basement gallery — what a great idea. The café had a feel that was slightly Nordic with its big airy spaces, white walls, and oak-colored wood interiors. People sat around chatting or writing or doing whatever their merry little hearts pleased. It was a feel good kinda place, juuuust liiiiike beeeiiiiing in loooooovvvvve. You can’t buy me love, but I might take the money and run. The gallery downstairs was in the process of transition, but there was a really good canvas on the wall which you would write on with chalk. An all over great place to eat, hang out and be cultured.

This is Camberwell’s gem both in terms of the café and the sneaky gallery tucked in the basement. The café serves freshly made sandwiches, salads, hot soup and homemade cakes and smoothies at excellent prices. The staff are all friendly and helpful and it has a really nice atmosphere. It is small, so can’t always accomodate large groups, but that is its only downfall. The gallery often showcases the work of local artists, and often work by the students from the local art college, and is always worth a visit. The café’s large front window is also included in the gallery space, so some wonderful and bizarre things can be seen peering through the glass at times!

This is a lovely little café with a gallery downstairs on Camberwell Church Street. It has everything going for it and I hope it thrives. It does takeaway sandwiches and eat-in meals including paninis, breakfast baskets, homemade soups, salads and freshly squeezed juices. The service is always with a smile and I feel very relaxed and at home here. There are papers and free magazines, along with couches and tables. Helpfully there is a well kept toilet too, as there are often mothers with children in here mid morning or mid afternoon. Sandwiches from £2.50; pot of tea from £1.20; soup £3.75; cakes from 80p.
