Top Location

They put the NFL American football playoff game on and stayed open until late. Decent wine and good service!

Had a lovely dinner here with my wife. She had the cheddar, potato and spinach pie with a draught cider and I had the bangers and mash with a gin and tonic. We were both really happy with our meals and drinks. The service was friendly and the atmosphere was warm and inviting. Very nice pub and some interesting history contained inside.

Really nice draft list and food selection. Staff is courteous and friendly. The pub has some interesting history what with having survived the fire of 1666! Even though there are no seats at the bar, the bartender Hamish let me pull up the stool for dinner and a chat. Great visit since I was solo traveling London. Try the(not) crème brule, it’s excellent!

A nice old Nicholson’s pub in the Aldgate area. Was a bit gutted to see the beer I wanted run out as they were pouring it, but there was more than one good option(ended up with Copper Dragon Golden Pippen, which is generally alright without being great) Food was required and for the price I thought the nachos were pretty decent. Like most pubs in the area the worst thing about this pub is the clientele and the sheer volume(number and noise) of aforementioned clientele.

Sought out Hoops and Grape, once we saw it listed as one of the oldest pubs in London. What we found was a normal looking pub with low energy. Having had a recent renovation, it looked far too modern than it should have. Some original brick was left in the fireplace toward the back, and the bathrooms and staircase were the highlight. Given we were really seeking an older pub, it would have been helpful if the remodel kept it’s old charm and history in tact instead of whitewashing the past in favour of a modern look.

Stopped in for a quick pint while wandering around the area. The selection of beer is good. It is a lot bigger on the inside than it looks from the outside. I noticed a lot of families having dinner here which is a good sign of the food. Located down the street from Aldgate underground station, it is pretty close to the City.

On my first day in London, a group of us entered the Hoop and Grapes to grab some beer and snacks before dinner. That’s when I suddenly realized that the last time I was in London, I was 17 years old… and so not of legal age. Now legal(wa-a-aay legal!), this would be my first taste of real ale from a British Pub. I was pretty damn happy about that. And so I ordered a Doombay from one of the hand pumps. Delicious! My British colleagues were pleasantly surprised, since some Americans find real ale tastes flat and warm. I had another. It’s a small place with low ceilings and a bathroom buried about two floors down in the sub-basement. Service was fairly friendly and the place was crowded but not ridiculous. A good selection of both beer and wine here. Thus the name. Thanks Hoop & Grapes for those tasty pints!

The Hoop and Grapes is a far more mysterious venture than you first might imagine. It’s the last stop on the East-End Jack the Ripper tour and beneath its floors are apprently blocked-off tunnels leading to an unknown destination. It’s also very old; parts of the building have withstood the great fire of London and it’s rumoured to be the oldest timber framed building in London. As such it’s a pub thats very proud of its history. Snug would be the perfect way to describe this relatively well-to-do drinking establishment. Lots of dark wood, comfy seating and deep autumnal décor make this a great place to relax on a cold winters day. The oldy-wordly elements are also quite a feast for the eyes, this place is swimming in character. Despite its slightly sordid past the Hoop and Grapes only attracts corporate criminals these days who mix alongside trendys of the East-End as well as one or two locals. On the whole there is a pretty friendly atmosphere though everyone more or less keeps themselves to themselves. Drinks wise this place has a very decent selection, specialising in Kentish ales in addition to a fari array of international lagers. It’s a little more expensive than I hoped but is still a far cry from West-End prices. I really liked this place and I reccomend it for a lazy Sunday afternoon.

The Hoops and Grapes had me hooked purely because of its history, and the fact I could touch the ceiling without tip toeing! This small watering hole is one of the oldest pubs in London, and as Gareth says it still holds the magic of being an olde worlde tavern. From what I remember, the booze was a reasonable price, the beers were nice and cold, the tables were suitably rickety and the bar staff were friendly. I felt like I had to burrow to find the bathroom, and appreciated the barmaid’s brazen but friendly approach. Her warmth was exactly what you’d want in a place like this! Despite being old of spirit it’s very well maintained, and seems to attract a varied but tame clientele. If I stayed in this area I’d pick this as my local over others due to its cheapened price and cozy atmosphere. A great find for international tourists searching for something«quaint» and British. I’ve been to some of the glossier cocktail bars that inhabit Soho and find them a far less memorable experience, starkly uncomfortable in contrast to drinking in a place like this. I’ll be back with one aim — to find the secret tunnels! See you on the other side.
