If you can ignore the snotty cow with the curly hair who decides IF you can have an appointment(and invariably gets it wrong when done by phone) then some of the girls who do the threading are fantastic. Paresha and Parul are great, both listen to your requests, and give what the client wants, not what they think fashion dictates you should have. Eyebrow threading and tinting and upper lip threading, is approximately the same price as just an eyebrow shape at Blink in Peter Jones, who have a worrying variation in standards. The Finchley branch are also pretty good. If only they opened Sundays…

This salon has a couple of branches in Finchley and elsewhere, but the Mill Hill one has really taken off in the past 5 years and it’s the one with which I have most experience, so please do not take my review as representative of all the Hena Salons. I’m really torn about writing this, because I have had very different experiences here based on the treatment I opted for. Threading: there is a lovely lovely lady called Parrol(sp?) who can thread the sh*t outta your eyebrows. She is amazing. When she ‘does’ your eyebrows, you walk out looking like you’ve had a facial and a good mini facelift. She’s magic. She has threading down to an art-form. If I were only reviewing Parrol and her phenomenal threading skills, I would give her 5 stars. Hands down. Brilliant. Waxing: twice I’ve been here for waxing, and each time I promised I wouldn’t return. The first time I booked an underarm and half leg wax because I’d had such a good experience with the threading services here. Unfortunatley, Parrol was unable to be my beautician for the appointment, so I had another lady whose name I can’t remember, but she seemed nice enough. Her waxing technique wasn’t amazing, but the hair came out and this place is relatively cheap, so I thought nothing of it. That was until the hair started growing back, and I realised she’d broken most of my hairs when she’d waxed me, which meant I had a million in-growing hairs. It was awful and itchy and something I’ve never experienced before. I promised myself I wouldn’t come back again. However, I couldn’t get an appointment at Ministry of Waxing(about which I have written a review: please PLEASE go to MOW for your waxing needs!) and desperately needed a Brazilian, so I popped into Hena as I knew they’d accommodate my last-minute needs… Possibly the worst experience of my life. The lady who waxed me reminded me of my judgmental aunties in India: she seemed disdainful that I was having a wax THERE and stood in the room while I got changed. She didn’t offer me a towel to cover myself up. I lay on the table, which she’d propped up like it was a chair, and tried to breathe deeply. I knew this was going to be terrible the minute she put the wax on me INTHEWRONGDIRECTION. Whenever she pulled the wax, some hair would come off, most snapped and in general my delicates were sorely hurt. She scowled every time I acknowledged the pain and told me that ‘this is what it feels like when you have this area waxed.’ I basically had to stop the appointment halfway through because it was too painful and she seemed intent on doing permanent damage. She tried to clear up the wax and then left the room. When I started to put my clothes on, I realised there were HUGE chunks of wax still stuck all over me, so I tried to get them off, first with the post-wax serum, then with scissors and eventually with some of the plain strips she’d been using. I was really stressed out, and suddenly — while I was bent over, half naked, covered in wax — the door burst open and the lady was just standing in the doorway glaring at me. She asked what I was doing, I tried to explain while covering myself up a little, and then she told me I had to hurry up because there was another appointment waiting. She did all this with the door wide open, so other staff walking past could actually see me, half naked and cowering in the appointment room. Eventually she left and I got dressed and left. She was the one who had to take my payment at the end, and I didn’t feel comfortable telling her what she clearly didn’t want to hear. The only reason this place doesn’t get a solo star is because of my good experiences with their threading services. I cannot recommend the eyebrow threading(at the hands of Parrol) enough: she’s a true artist. However, don’t ever come here for any other type of hair removal, and woe betide you if you come here for a Brazilian after reading my review!
