Was hopeful we would get a decent curry here after reading the reviews but found it to be mediocre. We had the butter chicken and a lamb dish that was described on the menu as spicy in a sweet and sour sauce. They both tasted about the same(one sauce was more tomatoey), the lamb was stringy rather than tender and the pashwari naan was disappointing too.

Thank you for seating me as a single patron with no reservation when it was very busy everywhere. I was starving. I ordered the butter chicken as recommended by others. My stomach and I left very happy. Highly recommend.

The different varieties of naan served here are in themselves enough to recommend. The cuisine is fresh and relatively light, and the service warm and efficient.

Un choc gustatif ! C’est mon premier restaurant indien à Londres et je né peux que comparer à tous ceux que je connais sur Paris, et la différence est inimaginable. Ce n’est tout simplement pas la même cuisine…

Traditional old style Indian food. Much better than what’s offered as Indian food west of Tottenham Court Rd.

Gopals is a pretty run of the mill Indian restaurant and the service was exactly the same, not great but not bad. All very uninspiring really I’m sorry to say, the menu looked promising with a few Keralan and Goan dishes on offer but in reality these were very hit and miss for me, the mutton Xacuti was nice, very unctuous and flavourful because it wasn’t plain old lamb like you so often find. The Keralan fish, which I think was an attempt at a Malabar was just awful, I really can’t find anything positive to say about it. It also came with rice which I hadn’t noticed on the menu, team that with our usual rice order for 2 and we were drowning in a sea of the stuff, I have never come across an Indian restaurant that includes rice with a main before so beware. I didn’t leave Gopals feeling like it had been a total disaster, but it certainly wasn’t a success either 2 Cobras did ease the pain though.

This place serves authentic Indian food. My friend got the house thali which is a food taster plate for £15 and I got the butter chicken for £7(I think, I can’t remember) and the food was good… I wish the food was a little more spicy as I’ve had in other Indian restaurants. The atmosphere I nice and the owners make you feel welcome. A little on the pricy side even for london standards, but then again it is in the heart of soho.

Been walking to the place for 20 minutes out in cold. When we got there manager politely said that they are closed for lunch. Time was 14:30 and as you can predict they close for lunch at 14:30 he did not want to get in our shoes and refused to serve us. Place by itself seemed quite nice. Can’t say anything about food though.

I have traditionally not been a fan of Indian food, but tried this place based on Unilocal recommendations and it was fabulous. I went with a couple of friends and we got 5 dishes, rice and naan to split. That was a great way to go since we got to try a variety of different things. The atmosphere was very comfortable and simple. The service was very good and the prices were quite reasonable. I would definitely recommend giving Gopals a try.

Soho can be a bit of a lottery when it comes to restaurants. There are really great places but also a lot of over inflated(over hyped and over priced) disappointments too. Gopals isn’t one of the new hip new comers. It’s been around since the 80s which in Soho must mean that it’s doing something right when other places open and close before you know it. It’s not an ‘on trend’ kind of food place either. Instead it’s just a great Indian restaurant that does Indian classics very well. No ‘small plates’ or fusion or any new concept stuff or Marketing… and in the middle of Soho it almost seems a novelty not to have that. Located between Dean St and Frith St, it’s a small frontage and fairly compact inside. Staff are attentive and welcoming and fast. I like that. I think you can order anything on the menu and it will all be good. I like the biryanis and a few side dishes: tarka dal or channa dal, or aubergines or bhindi. The lamb is super tender and the biryani rice is infused with spices and fresh mint. Naan bread is light and fresh. Beer comes in the large Kingfisher bottle variety and is good and cold. Perfect with the curry. The interior is traditional and a bit worn round the edges but come here for the food not for the designer vibe. There are plenty of other places nearby if you want some glitz and cool. Prices are very reasonable, especially for the location so adds up to a top rating for me.

Came here our last night in London, just needing that last fix of curry, not knowing our lives were about to change. This might be the most delicious butter chicken I’ve ever had, and it’s a long list. My mouth is watering just thinking about it. Chat, naan, and rogan josh were also stellar, but the butter chicken is the real academy award winner.

I would love to give this place four or even five stars. It’s very lovely in just how very family run(I’m pretty sure I witnessed a «Dad, jeez, why haven’t you taken their order?») and the food was super-fresh and well-seasoned. That being said, it was incredibly spicy. Atomically spicy. We like non-white person spicy, but this was just too much. I think it might just have been a bad day. I’d try it again.

If you’re in London and you want some Indian food. Look no further. Had the chance to eat here with friends while visiting this great city last month. The ambiance was great, very authentic. The staff is friendly and helpful. The pampadan at the beginning is awesome with wonderful dipping sauces. Butter Chicken and Chicken Vindaloo were the big winners at our table. The prices are a tad pricey, but you’re going to get your money worth. Great portions and awesome flavors. I’ve been craving this place since I left the London, if only they delivered across the pond!

I came here one night for a light meal, and was very pleased. But since I have been here only once and for two dishes only, I can’t give five stars. Mu husband and I were very pleased with the service and the food. We had an okra dish and a kofta, both really good. Also, we were pleased with portions: we ordered both dishes as side dishes, but it was a lot of food, at least compared to what we are used to in the US. On the other hand, rice does not come for free, but this seems to be standard fare in London. I would go back!

I had friends in from the US who were dying for good Indian and this hit the spot. The naan was so very fluffy and not greasy. The food was really delicious and the mixed tandoori was mouthwateringly tender, my friends were really happy. I would give it a five if this servings weren’t so small, yet we all left very full and satisfied. Will definitely go back.

Plain white storefront and typical, inoffensive interior décor, bordering on old fashioned, but nonetheless comfortable and clean. The menu is for the most part your standard curry, tandoori and naan Indian fare. Your experience is up to this point is very normal, you aren’t expecting this to turn into… some of the best Indian food around! What the! The naan is fluffy and melts in your mouth, no oil slick covers the perfectly spiced and complex curries and the tandoori is smoky and moistly sumptuous. whammy! It took a few outings to properly process exactly what happens here. We go in, expect just a normal meal, and then come out raving and stuffed and so happy. Through a painstaking process of repeat investigations I have determined this is no random occurrence. Gopal’s is just fantastic food. ps. If you are like my Italian deskmate and freak out because you can’t find your chicken tikka masala, get the Butter Chicken. Careful though, you might find yourself wanting to lather this most delicious sauce all over your face and body. pps. prices are fairly standard for curry, but the vegetarian sides are a steal, so if you’re a piggy you can bulk up on your quantities by liberally ordering a few of these tasty dishes. oink!

The best Indian food I have had in London so far. A large group of us ordered: — garlic naan with extra butter — soooooo good — paneer naan — sooooooo good — butter naan: didn’t try — butter chicken — good — chicken madras — soooooo spicy and delish — saag(spinach) — ok — fish kerala — a bit fishy — okra(Fresh Bhindi) — sooooooooooo delicious — aubergine/eggplant(Baingan Masala) — didn’t try — 3 rice — 2 kulfi(ice cream) — 1 punky(ice cream) I couldn’t stop eating the food because everything was so good. The service was alright. The portions were really small though. Although each dish was is about 8 gbp, it doesnt come with rice or naan and i dont think it’s enough for one person. 1.5 dishes per person would be more perfect, which means the meal can get expensive. Our total came out to be about 15gbp/person but we were allll so satisfied. We brought our friend Gopal to the restaurant hoping to get something out of it… you know like a free dessert, 15% off, or at least a pat on the head, but our server just looked at us blankly for a bit when we told him we had a gopal with us and said he mumbled something about checking something with somebody and averted gopal’s eyes for the rest of the meal. Note: 10% gratuity is automatically charged, as stated on the menu.

Some of the best korma I have had — wonderfully balanced sweetness and tanginess. The chicken Chaat as a starter is a must have. Wash it all down with a bottle of Cobra.

We visited this little place a while ago now — we were there in mid-week and it was fairly empty. The décor, for a change in an Indian, was rather nice, and the waiting staff were very attentive indeed. We had a couple of starters, mains and a side dish and I can’t fault the quality of the food — it was excellent. It was rather pricey though, with main courses about £8 to £10, mind you this is Soho we’re talking about You could do much worse if you’re looking for Indian food in Soho so I guess it has the thumbs up!
