Just around the corner from Stratford High Street DLR and just a few minutes walk away from Westfield, Golden Flakes occupies one of the workshops tucked away off of Stratford High Street. There is little in the way of signage, but during opening hours the shutter comes up and the counter faces out onto the street so it’s easy to spot as you walk by. The hot food takeaway menu covers such west indian staples as oxtail, jerk chicken, saltfish, curry as well as sides such as plantain and dumplings. There is also a cabinet of jamaican patties behind the counter including fillings such as jerk chicken, lamb, beef and vegetables. In addition to this are a number of speciality drinks available to accompany your meal. As this is primarily a catering company, the takeaway counter does not feature all options available at all times of the day. The shutter is usually down by 4 or 5pm and it is best to go by 1pm at the latest to ensure you get the best picks of the day. If you are looking for a quick lunch on the go I would recommend any one of the patties. If you are so inclined and they have them in stock, a side of fried plantains is absolutely delicious. If you’re hankering after something a little more substantial, the oxtail is hearty and filling(but slow down and watch out for those bones!).
