Since it was Thanksgiving in America yesterday when I was in London with an hour to kill before my next meeting I noticed that EAT in Eldon Street EC2 had«Turkey Hotpot» on the specials board. What a mistake! They charged almost £8 incl, VAT for a cardboard bowl of essentially mashed potato with gravy and a layer of «pulled» or shredded turkey on top — although it could have been chicken for all the taste it had. My receipt said it was a «BIG Festive Turkey». I did not feel in the least bit festive after the experience. For that price I wish I had eaten in the Red Lion pub across the road. Given it was my first visit to an EAT I think I will give the brand a miss for a year or two before I give them another chance.

EAT gets half a star more than Pret-a-Manger because the cashier gives you plasticware and a napkin at check out. I’ve been called a loser for having made that observation, but I can’t imagine that I’m the only one to have noticed this. This one on Eldon Street in particular definitely gives the Pret, located half a block away, a run for its money, because of several reasons. EAT has marginally better service; can’t put a finger on why exactly I say that but it just does. Many more products and foods. And, it’s HUGE — it’s practically a restaurant, with a LOT of seating.
