A fantastic local pub in Camden that is slightly off the beaten track and not full of youngsters(I’m showing my age!) The bar staff are super friendly which is a nice surprise given the amount of surly service you can get elsewhere. However, I have one regret about this pub and it’s the food. It’s not horrible or anything but it’s a case of form over substance. The presentation was great but the food itself underwhelming. The ham hock terrine lacked the salty hammy goodness the name implied. The aspic or whatever it was held in was horribly acidic and completely overwhelmed the taste of the ham hock. The duck confit was not actually a confit. I was expecting duck meat to be falling off the bone but the duck leg had just been roasted in the oven(this is not confit!!) The skin was perfectly crisp but the meat was tough and a struggle to eat. Definitely a drinking spot but I’m not so sure about the Crown and Goose as a spot for food.

This is kind of a bittersweet review I’m afraid. We had my work Christmas Party here. Unfortunately, there’s not much time left for The Crown and Goose. The countdown clock on the wall was at about 22 days and some change, and that’s all the time they have left. It’s a shame really, because the pub turned out to be quite a nice experience. The food was really tasty, even if it did take awhile for it to arrive. Part of that due to latecomers, but the other part I don’t know why. They don’t have the best wine list, but they do have some of my English sparking wine, so we opted to have a bottle of that. We were going to have the ale on cask, but they said they didn’t have any more. Turns out that wasn’t completely true as they put something else on a bit later. We thought maybe they’re trying to not over buy given they’ve got less than a month less, but who knows? The Christmas menu was nice and not incredibly expensive. The starters were nice, with a mix of traditional and non. The lamb was cooked wonderfully, as last year at our party I opted to not go with beef as I was concerned about it being over cooked, but no worries about lamb this year. The sides were all well cooked and there were many of them. They even brought us extra roast potatoes when asked(as everyone loves roast potatoes). My chocolate tart was rich but not overwhelming. It’s unlikely you’ll be able to experience your own Christmas party as it’s the last month for the pub. I think the building is being redeveloped so there’s no room for such a classic British pub. But you can go in if you like. Just don’t expect the best booze selection.

The Crown and Goose will always have a special place in my heart as it is where I met my now husband. He popped his head around the corner and smiled at me and I knew I was hooked! After I got over that life changing moment I had a chance to take in my surroundings and I have to say my first impressions were good. It had a cosy feel to it, with an open fire(and as it was November and freezing outside, that was a major plus). The atmosphere was very relaxed and on my second visit to The Crown and Goose I got to sample the food. It was a Sunday so I had a sunday lunch. Really yummy roast beef with homemade Yorkshire puddings and sides that included a braised red cabbage. The prices are not too bad considering it is just off Camden High Street. As it is now turning into Autumn and the nights are closing in, I would highly recommend The Crown and Goose as a place to warm and feed yourself.

We went in the evening with a large group of people– there was no where for us to sit so we broke into smaller groups throughout the pub. It was also really loud so difficult to hear anyone. I thought the drinks were so so. they were very expensive and not as strong as I think they should be for that price. It feels like a dive bar inside, but without the cool dive bar experience and prices.

Wow. What a lovely surprise! We were heading for KOKO to see a gig. Popped into The Blues Kitchen, which is always good, but also always full — as it was that day. I asked the waitress if she would recommend another place and it didn’t take her long to suggest Crown & Goose just off Camden High Street. A recommendation from a local professional is always good so we headed off the beaten path and found Crown & Goose just up the road. Looks a bit scruffy, but is clearly a proper pub. Menu out front was promising and once we stepped inside we were immediately embraced by a lovely atmotphere. We were greeted by several staffers and given a choice of tables, in spite of the place being full. We ordered that day’s special: Bavette steak — one of my personal favorites. Before it arrived the attentive staff suggested a couple of Sam Adams and joined into a coversation about crappy hotels. The steaks arrived very quickly, but were amazing. The best bavette steak I’ve had outside of France! What a treat! After another chat we got the bill. All three of us couldn’t believe how cheap it was. Utterly amazing. We praised the guys and woved to come back soon! I can’t wait.

I do like the look of this pub, both inside and out, but it seems more of a pub for eating in or enjoying a drink with 1 or 2 friends or perhaps a partnerthe candlelit, slightly cramped-for-room interior doesn’t seem best suited to a larger group of drinkers, unless it is warm enough to hang around outside. They did have 1 decent ale on, which was Adnam’s bitter This was one of my top qype recommendations for a while now and although it didn’t push all of my buttons, it is definitely a good pub f
