I bought my Brompton folding bike from this shop several years ago. Because it is the main Brompton dealer in the area, I am forced to use this shop occasionally for repairs. Otherwise, for my other bicycles, I prefer to make a longer journey to an alternative shop in Beckenham. The physical service this shop provides for repairs/maintenance etc. has been faultless in my experience. However, apart from the proprietor, who is easy to talk to, I find the people working in the store unfriendly and unwelcoming. There is a sense they despise their customers, and on many occasions I have been made to feel ‘small’, when asking a question, which might seem elementary to them. Quite why they need to be this way, I don’t know, but I can honestly say I dread it when something goes wrong with my Brompton and I know I’ll have to pop in to this shop.

I cannot commend them highly enough. Most of the staff in the store are very friendly, helpful, and they all seem to know their stuff. They really helped me out when I was looking for a bike, they let me test some models(despite it being very close to closing time) and gave me lots of helpful relevant advice. The bike shop also supports the London Cycle Campaign(LCC) and give a generous discount: whilst this originally attracted me to the shop, the quality of service would have me visiting there even if they did not. There is a decent stock of bikes of all types, so folders, cruisers, mountain bikes, and hybrids are covered. I haven’t tried their bike servicing yet, but I’m intend to when the time comes.

My review is based on my experience of Compton’s, when I helped my friend decide what bicycle to buy. She bought a nice hybrid bike from Comptons in the end. I think that if you are planning to buy a new bicycle and you live near Catford, then I strongly recommend that you pay a visit to Compton’s. It is only a few metres away from Halfords, but the two retailers are worlds apart. Compton’s is actually run by Chris Compton, who was a international cyclist, and who I believe competed in the Olympics some time ago. Whether you are a keen amateur cyclist or a novice, Compton’s stock all sort of quality bicycles for all different requirements. Furthermore, the staff at Compton’s have really good knowledge of the products they sell and they can help to identify and suit your cycling needs.
