Camden Town Underground Station

Wenn man in London ist ist ein Besuch des Camden Market Pflicht. Die U-​Bahn ist leider deswegen sehr voll. Der Bahnsteig und die Zuwege sehr eng.
Um die Menschenmassen zu bewältigen ist diese Station am Wochenende für Einsteiger geschlossen. Um in die Stadt zurückzufahren muss man zur nächsten Station laufen ca.1km.Etwas stressiges Erlebniss.

You can use this station for Out of Station Interchange, connecting to Camden Road Overground, and with PAYGO oyster, will be considered as one journey rather than two, thus paying one fare.
It’s a very busy station, where people change for the Bank or the Charing Cross branch of the Northern line going south or High Barnet or Edgware lines going north! As well as a busy station serving the Camden Lock area, that at weekends, it is exit only between 1pm and 5.30pm to ease the congestion on the narrow platforms. Luckily, the area is served by very good bus services, otherwise it would be quite an inconvenience to locals needing to use the station at weekends. As congestion gets worse, there has been many discussions of rebuilding the station for many years and also to create a better ambiance, but plans for surrounding buildings, markets and church to be demolished to do so, obviously met with quite a lot of disagreement, so new plans had to be developed.
In the meantime the congestion continues!
Also remember there is one entry to the station, via the ticket office side, but exit on both sides. Annoying when you are on the non-​ticket side and have to walk round the HSBC Bank to the other side, especially if you are in a hurry! Grrr!
My other gripe is with all stations that are busy, is people will stand on the left of escalators blocking people who want to walk. Please stand on the right if you do not want to walk! That is what «Please stand on the right» means, unless of course, they are tourists and cannot read English, then I am happy to say «excuse me», but no excuse for the English speakers!

Well located station with frequent trains to various locations. The staff is friendly and helpful and the station always feel clean and looked after.

I hate you, Camden Town Station. You’ve done me dirty on several weekends with your bullshit closures. Riddle me this… WHY would you make the station exit only to control the flow of tourists when you aren’t allowing tourists to LEAVE??? Or what about, ya know, the people that need to use it? Ugh.
Plus, the slow walking, waddling tourists are always blocking the sidewalk, making the entry into it a slow, arduous and time wasting experience. The market is cool to take a look around and the food in the area is pretty good, though I can’t understand why tourists flock to it. Whatever.

I SO want to say nice things because of its location, right in the heart of Camden and ideally placed to get to Koko, Islington, Camden Market and a ridiculous amount of pubs, clubs and shops. But sadly that’s the only good thing about it.
It’s ALWAYS either completely shut or exit only, at the busiest times too, which makes it of little to no use.
The few times it deigns to open to the public, it’s overwhelmed by drunk people, hipsters or tourists.
The platforms are dirty and crowded, the trains are rarely on time and using it makes my blood boil to the point where I want to punch someone. ARGH. FORGET IT.

I’ve reviewed a fair amount of tube stations and they’ve mostly been pretty positive. They get me where they need to go, the lines run (pretty) well and usually there’s a neat fact or two about each one.
But Camden Underground Station? Camden Underground Station can suck it.
Why is this tube station so terrible all the time. First off, it’s closed randomly, for no reason that anyone has been able to explain to me. It will just turn into exit only and they’ll gate it shut. That’s useful. And the people here? Camden is either filled with tourists or drunk people (or the worst combo in the history of combos, drunk tourists) making it even worse to try to take this line. No matter what time of day or night you come, it’s crowded and awful.
Plus, the Northern Line just suuuuuuuuucks.
Here’s the thing, I really like visiting Camden, despite the tourists. The market is fun and the food is great. So you at least get a star for building a station right in the heart of a neighbourhood I do enjoy. But why can’t you be better to make my journey to and from here easier. This is why we can’t have nice things, Camden.

Yes. It’s only available for exit on Sat and Sun from certain times.
I just loved this station. I was staying 5 minutes away and it always got me where I needed to go quick fast and in a hurry.

Find me a worse Tube Station…
Often unexpectedly completely closed for either exit or entry, bewildering platforms that you have to rush back and forth between to catch the next train, drunks and hobos galore and, of course, the icing that makes up 90% of this repulsive cake… the Northern Line.
Some may argue that Bank is worse, with it’s rabbit warren full of suits. Green Park is also annoying in many ways. But for me the worse has always been Camden Town. Such a great place to visit… by bus.

TIPP: Wer hier mal auf die Toilette muss, sollte zum Burger King etwas die Strasse runter gehen und dann rechts von der Kasse geduldig warten, bis jemand auf der mit einem Zahlenschloss gesicherten Toilette kommt. So muss man nix kaufen, wenn man mal muss ;-))

As an underground station goes i like Camden. But why are you reading this review? If you need to come here just do it — its much like the others. ;-)

Ah, the happy memories I have of the times I have had at Camden Town. Let me relate them to you.
Okay, that’s done. It’s a short (null) list because the only times I get to Camden Town Tube are to change from one branch to the other. Exiting a perfectly good Northern Line train so that I can stand on a platform and wait for one that’s actually taking the branch I want. It seems that every time I want the Edgware Branch, the trains are all for High Barnett. Or if I want High Barnet branch, well, you get the point.
It’s easy enough to switch from one to the other and I do have to admit that they’ve gotten the signage right so the tourists don’t spin in circles trying to figure it out.
What’s the deal with exit only on weekends? I mean, WHY?

If you can get over the station’s flaws… what’s not to love?
The bad — exit only on Sat and Sun 12−5… any Londoner knows this. It can be a pain in the beeeehind to have to trek upto Chalk Farm but in my book that means I get to gio via the stables market. winner.
The good — the frequent trains to ALL northern line stops on the network! Yeah baby! No switching at Kennington, no changing lines, nothing silly.
The ugly — well, I think this is the best bit about this station. There are hoards of fugly kids who hang around in Camden who long gave up on salvaging their natural faces and went the Goth route. If nothing else, they’re so entertaining! «Let’s all the dress the same because we’re individuals»!! Sorry, explain that again?
Now that I work in Camden, heading to the station means either I’m going home or I’ve just had a good night out and I’m pickled. Double winner.

Camden tube station is the epicentre of the northern portion of the Northern Line. From the fabled Camden you can head along the Charing Cross branch through the West End or take the Bank branch through the city. At times this can be a little confusing. Even though there are two ways into the station, you are only allowed out in one and in in the other. I find this frustrating. The Bank branch is much slower than the Charing Cross, so if you are heading into the deep south, you should consider this. Going south there are two platforms, both serving both branches. Trying to work out which tube is going first to your location can mean running like a headless chicken in this usually over-​crowded station. Now what really gets my heckles up is when I am on a Bank train pulling into Camden, and the underground powers that be decide it will be amusing to suddenly change it to a Charing Cross train. Ok so I’ll get off and run to the other platform. The Bank train is sat on the platform… Yes! No. Twenty guys dressed as Santa are causing a ruckass and the platform attendant will not signal the doors open. The train leaves. Bummer, I have to wait another six minutes. My Bank train arrives, I get on and hear «This train will now be changing route. We are now going via Charing Cross.» Noooooooooooooooo! I wanted to claw out someone’s spleen. Confused? Yes so was I. I’ve lived in Camden for two years and still don’t understand this stupid station. I was so pissed today, I got off the tube, left the station, and got myself a cab.
Camden tube station… You suck, and you are kind of grotty.

While there IS an entry for the Northern Line as a whole, I just feel the need to complain about this station in particular.
This is MY station. I live all of two minutes away. Yet, on the weekends when I’m trying to get someplace further away than Angel (Kensington, for example), it’s a nightmare. Why? Because on the weekends, the station is exit only from noon to 5 pm… the precise hours that everyone wants to travel. Now, as I understand it, this is supposed to help with the huge influx of tourists on weekends… um, how precisely? It’s exit only, which means you have people getting off and not being able to LEAVE Camden until 5… which also translates into my blood pressure rising from all of the prams and small children screaming that they’re tired. Ugh.
Also, the escalators are broken, and have been broken for several months… I should know, I moved from Farringdon to Camden on public transport and it was no bueno. THe stairs aren’t so bad if it wasn’t that EVERYONE is walking down the stairs at a snail’s pace, frequently making one miss their train. Also, the sign says there are 96 steps… there are only 76 that I counted. So HA! :)
Camden Station = Saddie :(

Camden’s markets are one of London’s main tourist attractions so it’s unfortunate that visitors must first have to negotiate this tube station to get to them. Hopelessly inadequate during busy periods its ticket hall is too small, it has too few escalators (at just two it’s less than newer and smaller Jubilee Line extension stations) and exiting can be a problem due to the number of people congregating on the paths outside.
A far better way to get to the markets is to get off at Chalk Farm (on the Edgware branch) and walk south — it’s only a couple of minutes to the northern end of the markets. It’s also possible to exit at Mornington Crescent (Charing Cross branch) and walk up Camden High Street but there is little of interest to see on this route.
Plans are afoot to modernise and extend it but they are still several years from being realised and given the often chaotic nature of tube management the delivery date could be postponed.

It gets so busy during the weekend that they always close it for people that want to leave Camden. You need to walk to chalk farm or Mornington Cresent. They recently changes the tiles on the ground floor.
People tend to get confused with 4 different platform for only 1 line but as long as you check the display at the bottom of escalators you should be able to take the right train.
If you are not a fan of stairs use chalk farm as they sometimes make people walk down when the station is too busy.
Besides that sometimes you might meet a nice beggar outside that will sell you a tube pass he found on the street for a quid or two :)

Its a nightmare at the weekends as it is so busy you can’t enter the station on sunday’s and you have to walk down 96 steps on Saturday. Best to avoid
