If you’re looking for authentic, Egyptian home cooking then this is the place for you. It’s awfully unassuming and not exactly the most flashy looking of places. You’d be excused for walking past it, as it doesn’t look like anything special but sometimes(very much so in this case) there are hidden gems. Ali Baba really does great food, with a good traditional menu to choose from. While the décor may not match some of the prices, you’ll be quietly surprised at how delicious and well done the food here is.

Got intrigued after reading the reviews and on a day that I was craving for kebabs, I’ve decided to venture in. The little hole-in-the-wall was indeed like what other reviewers had mentioned — awkward empty place with a not-so-friendly older couple. The lady almost barked at me when she asked if I wanted to put hummus in my sandwich. To be fair, I don’t think they were rude or difficult. But smiles and greetings were not their top priority(actually I didn’t care that much for it either in this case). Nevertheless, I loved how the lady started frying raw lamb meat on the grill after I ordered. She literally cooked the food fresh in front of me! The wait was not bad at all and I had the time to look around the different Islamic artworks on the wall. They were quite fascinating! I took my kebab home and oh it was delicious. The lamb was perfectly cooked and seasoned. The hummus portion was just right and there was copious amount of salads. I can’t wait to return and have another go or try something different. The only thing I wish was they would provide napkins and a bag for takeaway. But I guess it is a no frill place and I suppose it could count as environmental friendly!

Staff was pretty nice and helpful when I went. Good chicken and beef kebobs. Minced lamb was meh. Decent salad, bread, and hummus. Overall a good place for a bite

This Egyptian restaurant is very unassuming(when I say unassuming, I mean kinda looks like it’s not in full operation). We noticed it while doing laundry across the street. The lady who runs the place was setting up for lunch as we were leaving. She seemed nice enough and the menu looked pretty good so we vowed to return. About an hour later we returned. We were the only ones there at the time. The lady, who’s name I should have gotten, was friendly and happy to put together a nice array of options. We ended getting 5 or 6 starters so we could sample a bit of everything. They included falafel, hummus with meat, a cucumber and yogurt salad, pita, and kibbeh. We then finished with baklava! Seriously, everything was delicious and really well priced– especially for the location. Highly recommend seeing past the façade and giving this local gem a try.

In a funny residential spot, its not your typical late night kebab house. I had a lamb shish kebab(there was no schawarma) to go and it was tender and tasty with piles of salad that made it seem particularly healthy. Run by an older couple who were not the friendliest but the kebab was tasty and fresh. Also had some delicious and light home-made bakawah which was a treat!

I’m with Emily on this one, a solid 3 stars. Good food in a quite weird surroundings. The kind of place you feel like your intruding on, because inevitably there is no-one else in there, or the only other person is a lunatic all dressed in white claiming to be the Sikh Father Xmas. Very good schwarma though, although I’d get it to go rather than hanging around.
