Sea Fresh has been called ‘Abba Fresh’ for about 3 — 4 years now. Abba Fresh is an Afro-Anglo-Caribbean Takeaway! Not only can you get traditional Fish and Chips here, but also dishes such as Jolofe Rice(a West African staple) and Curry Goat(a classic Caribbean dish). The premises is run by the affable(and tireless!) Felix and his wife, who have built up a loyal customer base in the past 4 years or so. The premises is primarily operated as takeaway but does have some(tightly packed) tables and chairs should you choose to eat-in. It is bright, clean and is styled in a ‘traditional’ chippie layout. The prices are average(a small Cod and Chips is £5.30 at the time of writing), the portion size is average and waiting times can be long. This being the case, why is this my chippie of choice locally? Simply put, it is the best. Felix cooks all his fish fresh for you, hence the(sometimes) long waiting times. You won’t be fed a piece of fish that was cooked hours ago and has been kept in a warmer. Abba Fresh will also cook to your specification. Do you like your batter extra crispy? They will oblige, no problems. Felix and co also only cook small loads of chips at a time(which again can lead to longer than usual waiting times) but this means that the chips are always relatively fresh and they always seem cooked to perfection. So what of the other styles of food available? The Jolofe rice is very good, try it with hot sauce on the side if you like it spicy. I haven’t tried the other African dishes on offer, but judging by reputation they must be good. The situation with the Caribbean dishes is strange! I’ve grown up on a lot of(but not solely) Caribbean food and the dishes served at Abba fresh simply aren’t authentic. So what’s so strange? Well because they taste great in their own right! So the Curry Goat doesn’t taste quite like Curry Goat as I know it, but as a stew it’s a meal I would buy anyway. The same goes for the jerk dishes, they don’t taste quite how you would expect them to taste, but they taste very good all the same! For an authentic Caribbean flavour, try Gabby’s on Walworth road. Prices for the Afro-Caribbean menu at Abba Fresh are average(e.g.£4.00 for small beef stew and plain rice). All in all one of the best take-aways in the Walworth area.
