Wonderful food, good service, good value on nights that they have a discount. Group of three all got different meals and everything came out delicious

I’m not sure what the other reviewer means by «pub food,» because the menu I saw here was many steps above the average fare I’d seen in Ireland. But the host going the extra mile for us is really what made this evening great.
Short version: my wife and I got into Derry much later than expected, and were trying to find a halfway decent place to eat. Quay West was one of two places we had wanted to try, but each had a 45 – 60 minute wait on that Saturday night. But the Quay West host took pity on us, (probably because we looked harried, rain-​drenched, and starving), asked a few servers, and got us a spot at a very tiny, out-​of-​the-​way table sandwiched between a closet door and a dividing wall. It was a table that probably any other diners would have complained about, but we were exceptionally grateful to have.
The place is very lively, and the food we had was excellent. My wife had the roast chicken, I had the basil monkfish, and we couldn’t have been happier with our meals. (Granted, maybe it was influenced by us being starving, but I think we would have enjoyed it nonetheless.)
The only problem that arose was after we had finished the meal, and inexplicably, the waitstaff seemed to forget about us. We waited about 30 – 40 minutes for our bill. (Again, it may have been because of our awkward placement at a typically-​unused table.) However, the waiter, upon realizing his mistake, got 30% taken off our bill as an apology.
Truly, for two people wandering in out of the rain on a Saturday night, the people at Quay West could not have been more welcoming. If I am lucky enough to be back in Derry, I will certainly return.

This place was rated so highly among online reviewers that I had to go. I’m still not sure what all the fuss is about. It was pub food and not even great pub food. Average setting with average food at an average price. It’s OK. That’s all. The cocktails in the pub were very average also. Could be good on weekend night out as I know it’s very popular, but for food I really wouldn’t bother.
