My early experiences of getting my haircut generally involved sitting uncomfortably in dentists-style barber chairs squirming whilst my dad talked to the barber. Fortunately, my experiences in Voodou for Men have been much better. The stylists are knowledgeable and friendly, covering the usual hairdresser topics(«You going away this year?») but also branching away from those types of small talk as well. In my experience the haircuts I’ve received have been a bit hit-and-miss but I get the feeling that if you go in with a definite idea the stylists would be more than happy to meet your requests. Some stylists can be quite expensive but the loyalty card they offer represents good value for money(if you can afford 7 haircuts first) and they also offer student discount.

There are now three Voodou hair Salons for men and one for women based in Liverpool city centre. This is the biggest of the men’s, with the smallest being situated inside the new L1 Topman shop and the other tucked away in Button Street down by Matthews Street. Voodou is now a popular Liverpool brand and a group of shops that are very popular with the student community as they offer styled haircuts, colours and male grooming such as wet shaves etc. They offer student discount on all services and a loyalty card that entitles you to a free haircut in every siz that you have with the same stylist. You get great service in Voodou, getting a head massage whilst they shampoo you before your cut, and being offered a bottle of beer or a glass of wine whilist they cut your hair. Most haircuts come with a finish and you leave feeling clean and sharp. Unfortunately, as with most hairdressers, you will still get stylists pushing products on you towards the end of the cut. ‘Try our conditioner and hair wax. much better than anything on the high street and just £20!’.

Unlike the reviewer below, I have had several really good experiences in Voodou for Him. The chief stylist Luke is extremely helpful and is able to offer his opinion on what will look best. The stylists in Voodou are all well trained, reflected by the number of customers through the door, repeat business is clearly essential and Voodou has been well established for many years now so is obviously doing well. One of the big bonuses of having your haircut at Voodou is the Voodou disciples card. This offers discounts at many of the city’s shops and restaurants and allows you to get every 8th haircut for free!

Being the largest of the Voodou salons, I booked myself in here for a nourishing treatment, assuming that the service would be excellent. Instead, the stylist nearly ripped half my hair out attempting to comb it(god knows how — I have generally lank, straight hair) and then announced that I must’ve done all sorts to my head as my hair was like wire wool. At this point, my patience was thin, and then I asked her what she was planning to do to condition and treat my hair before she trimmed it. She told me she would just slap some conditioner on and leave it to soak in. Bloody marvellous, I thought. And that is literally what she did. I got a head full of sloppy conditioner, and then they put me under a heater. Now, I may not be a hair expert, but I’m pretty sure drying conditioner onto your head isn’t the best way to go about things. After leaving me baking for about half an hour whilst she gabbed to a colleague, my attentive stylist came back, and after rinsing out the caked-on conditioner, proceeded to cut half my hair off, claiming it was ‘beyond rescuing’. I can’t remember how much they charged me for this delightful experience, and it was a good few years ago now, but the salon is still going strong so I must only be one of a few disgruntled customers!
