The Flute is a big, shabby barnlike place that serves drinks at bargain bin prices and is a good pubbery to sit in the afternoon and early evening, despite the snail’s pace of the service. At the weekend you’ll notice how, round about half nine, the lights go off and a tiny dancefloor opens up in the middle of freaking nowhere, as if the owner had just bought a disco floor he was dying to try out. The DJ tries to whip everybody up into the dancing spirit but since it’s just too early, there’s very few takers. After a few more glugs though the customers loosen up, making the Flute a relatively enjoyable place to be. Another bonus of this early bird approach to clubdom is the fact that when you leave at what feels like 4am, you notice it’s still only ten o’clock. Best to visit when the students have gone home.

The Pied Piper of punters on Hardman Street The Flute pulls people in by tantalising them with cheap drinks offers and a rowdy what-you-see-is-what-you-get atmosphere. Did I Mention that they serve wine by the glass for 99p?! Yep, Less than One English Pound. Craziness. Therefore, it’s a bit of a student hotspot and it’s particularily big so you can take All your mates and they won’t even notice you. They also do a killer pub quiz, last time, we won a bottle of wine for being so awesome! However, i have to admit the answers were mainly not my doing! It’s lively to say the least so if you want to pep up your evening then one or two in The Flute will see you right!

The Flute is an excellent pub on the excellent Hardman Street which you may have noticed is one of my favourite locations in the entirity of Liverpool. There is a banner on the pubs’ entrance which states that it has been officially voted as Liverpools’ cheapest pub and this certainly seems to be the case. Single vodka and mixers are £1.60 for and only £2.50 for a double which puts the prices of many similar bars to shame and it is also only £1.50 for a pint of carlsberg. It is not just the prices in the Flute which make it one of my favourite pubs to visit in Liverpool it is the fact there are no airs and graces, what you see is simply what you get. The fact that the décor is far from extravagant does nothing to detract from the excellent student orientated atmosphere, if anything it adds to the authenticity. There are various screens throughout the pub which show live sport and music videos meaning it is an excellent place for groups to congregate for a big sporting event and indulge themselves. The music is mainly chosen by the preferences of those at the juke box however when there is no one paying you still find a good selection of modern and contemporary music which is well suited to the student crowd. The only downside to The Flute is its’ food service which often takes a long time to arrive and is generally poorer and more expensive than The Hope and Anchor Pub which is nearby. There is the general pub fare such as lasagne and beer and a burger deals but the food is often hard and going cold by the time it arrives meaning it hardly makes for a gourmet experience. The fact that the food is poor should not detract students or young locals from visiting The Flute, the atmosphere is lively and entertaining and although the staff aren’t amazing the drinks are extremely cheap and this is more than enough to keep skint students happy.

There should be nothing particularly attractive about this bar on Hardman Street, it’s just your bog standard chain pub. Inside it’s like a warehouse that has been mocked up as a pub for the purposes of a hidden camera show — nothing looks quite real, like it’s all been reclaimed a couple of times before. Of a night something miraculous happens though and it turns into the most funnest place in the entire world. Maybe it’s because they practically thrust a pitcher of cheap vodka cocktail into your hands the minute walk into the door, maybe it’s the soundtrack of dance remixes of songs you sort of remember having on a mix CD at some point in your adolescence, maybe just that it’s full of people who you know and don’t mind falling into or on top of. It’s probably a combination of those things. It’s usually the combination really, isn’t it.

About half of the times I have started a night in the flute with a view to moving on into town, I have ended up staying till final orders. It has such an infectious atmosphere that it is an extremely hard place to leave! First impressions can be deceiving, it could use redecorating and some new TV screens for a start, but despite this there is something about the flute that invites you to stay there all night. During the day there is a wide selection of well priced pub food, which while not exactly gourmet is perfect for meeting up with a few friends for a pint and lunch. If your lucky the pool table may even be free but this seems to be in constant use every time I have been there! The best time to be in the flute is on a Saturday night when there is normally a live band. This is the best place to be before you head down the hill into town. The drinks prices are the same throughout the week so a cheap pint or spirit/mixer on a Saturday night is a welcome change from the inflated prices that many other venues feel necessary to charge at the weekends. The bar staff are friendly and although it can sometimes seem understaffed, waiting times at the bar are usually quite short. The staff are also very accommodating, especially at a recent birthday when they were more than happy to assist my group in concocting a dirty pint for the birthday boy!

Otherwise known as The Flute and Firkin is a long standing student pub at the top of Hardman St, handily situated near the universities for any skiving students wishing to spend as little of their loans on as many pints as possible. This isn’t the place for beer and ale connoisseurs as the pints are not the best and the bottle eselection generally comprises of all things blue and fizzy. However, The Flute is a good venue for big occassions as the rowdy student vibe often encourages a silly, party atmosphere for Paddy’s Day, Christmas end of term etc as long as you don’t mind cheesey pop and singing along to 80s MOR rock. With plenty of tellys and a big screen The Flue is also a good venue for football so with a big student contingent you can often get an interested crowd for even the most meaningless game.

The Flute, used to be The Flute and Firkin, is an odd sort of place. Sometimes when you walk in it feels like all the life has been sucked out of the place and the barmen are only standing there because they’ve been chained to the bar. At other times, its quite lively, and once or twice I’ve been in and it’s been packed. Somewhere I went to in my youth and not so much anymore, I think the appeal was that they didn’t mind having teenagers dancing around like idiots on the small stage. My fondest memory is of one evening when a big group of us were out and there was a dodgy DJ playing wedding reception style music, and he put Michael Jackson’s ‘Beat It’ on. Well, at that point in his life, one of my friends was modelling himself on MJ to the point of wearing white socks with black shoes and trousers, and to humour him we’d let him teach us the dance routine to Beat It earlier that week because he’d put in the effort to learn it. All of a sudden, all hell broke loose, and as you can imagine, in our drunken states we all darted up and started doing the full out dance. It was like a scene from Glee. In my mind we were all perfectly in sync and looked fab. All the other punters probably thought the special society was out. Anyway, that’s my best way of describing The Flute!

The flute is a great favourite with students, and general pub goers. Not only does it offer a wide variety of drinks and drinks offers, it is one of the few pubs in Liverpool that has pool tables. Many an afternoon has been spent chilling out in The flute, having a few drinks, and playing a bit of pool. The booth seats makes it a great meeting place for a large group of friends, and the bar is long enough that you dont feel you are being overlooked when it is busy.
