Being good at pool/snooker is said to be testimony to a misspent youth. Clearly I’m an angel, if my hit-and-miss form is anything to go by. But where better to seven-ball your brother, or completely miscue and hit the white off the table towards your fourth pint, than Rileys. I could easily spend a weekend here, shooting pool and sinking beer, if my puny bank balance would allow. There’s an array of pool tables, and a few snooker tables for the hardcore, to choose from, US and English. The cues are a better standard than you’ll find in any pub, and the baize, while not Crucible standard, is usually in pretty good nick too. It almost invariably proves cheaper than playing anywhere else, unless you’re with someone extremely slow, as you can play for an hour for just over £6. Riley’s often has offers on too, so you can get 3 hours for the price of 2. Even though I’m a bit of a chubber there’s normally adequate room for queuing, but if it’s particularly busy and the balls dictate you sometimes have to wait for a second to allow someone else to take a shot. TV’s showing the latest sports results/matches are a bonus.

I went to Riley’s last night and thoroughly enjoyed myself. It was £6.95 for just over an hour of pool and the place had a really good atmosphere, but that wasn’t the best thing about it. The best thing was the draught beer! I honestly had the best pint of Coors Light that I have ever tried in my life! It was just a perfect pint, they must get fresh barrels and have incredibly clean lines because the pint stayed crisp to the last sip, and the second pint was just as good. I feel it’s hard to find a really good pint these days, hence my ranting on about it! There are over 20 pool and snooker tables and there is a relaxed and friendly atmosphere inside here. The bar staff were very friendly and the clientele were hassle free and chilled out. They had a few slot machines as well as all the pool tables, one of them cost me a tenner for no return, but ha d a whopping £250 jackpot! I would recommend this place to groups of mates who want to go out for a few pints and play pool any night of the week!

Although lacking any of the atmosphere of a real pub, Riley’s is nonetheless a bar with a huge selection of pool and snooker tables. That is the main reason that it gets 3 stars as there aren’t many places these days that are so easily found with snooker tables. Although it does all depend on how quick you are getting through your games to decide whether you get any value for money, Riley’s is not cheap as you do pay by the hour instead of the usual option of playing as and when you feel. As for the beer it’s not a great selection and they are just as expensive. You pay for the availability of the tables. Book ahead for a Friday and Saturday evening.

I’m sorry but you just cannot go wrong with Rileys. It is not possible. Whether you are an avid snooker/pool player or not, nothing beats a relaxing afternoon with a few mates/drinks watching something sporty and letting off some steam by shooting some pool. Full membership for a year is £7. Boom!!! They also have a £10 offer where you get two hours of play avec two pints, not bad eh? The reason why I like Rileys so much is its very accesible, they are everywhere. So if you have membership you can go to any one of their 120+ branches in the UK. This particular one is also open until the late hours, midnight on weekdays and 1am at weekends. So as you can imagine it is a perfect way to spend a few hours after work getting some well earned rest for the brain. There is plenty of comfort food options for tea as well should you decide. If you aren’t a member already I suggest you join and give it a go. It really is heaps of fun.
