Think Pink. Think neon pink infact, fake moustaches, giant cocktail glasses filled with purple liquid, flashing dance floors, Cyndi Lauper on repeat and a hell of a lot of men who’ve clearly been caged up with no female contact for ten years. This, my friends, is Reflex Liverpool. I came here on Saturday night for a hen weekend, a weekend where me and 16 of my Glaswegian friends descended upon the home of The Reds with our blue WKDS and dress up costumes, ready to sample the delights that you people had to offer. And I have to say, we were not disappointed. Deep in the mass of watering holes Liverpool has to offer nestles Reflex, somewhere where I was familiar with, having been to the one in Glasgow(nowhere near as good) and the one in Blackpool, where I bought a pair of oversized sunglasses and thoroughly embarrassed my boyfriend getting drunk on orange Bacardi Breezers like a 15 year old. Anyhoo, we went, paid £2 to get in, ran upstairs like demented folk and grabbed seats in the mezzanine area, which was a brilliant find as the bouncers took it upon themselves to be our personal bodyguards all night, stopping anyone else from coming up and stealing our seats. It was like our own wee VIP area! We dressed up as builders. Pink ones. I know. Tacky, but I like tacky sometimes. Helps you take yourself less seriously. Plus, we had cool plastic tools. Loads of people were dressed up, in Stag and Hen parties, and this is clearly a popular place to go for that sort of thing. Drink prices were pretty good, compared to other places we’d been in Liverpool, where everything seemed to be twice as dear as Glasgow. Overall, I loved it. Meatloaf, Bön Jovi, Madonna and Prince all helped make our weekend one to remember. My advice? Don’t go here on a first date, or even if you’re out for a sophisticated after-meal jive. It’s more than likely you’ll end up being clobbered by an inflatable guitar.

Reflex is situated just between Bold Street and Concert Square and is quite literally one of the most painful places I have ever been. To make it worse I’ve actually been there twice, I’ve no idea why I put myself through it twice. The only good thing about the Reflex is that its cheap to get in, only £2 on a Saturday night. The door staff are friendly but its like they almost feel sorry for you having to go in there whilst they get to stand outside. The ground floor is very dark, which is probably just as well. There is a large bar at the back but this is usually a few people deep queueing for drinks. Upstairs is slightly better but it takes a huge climb up the equivalent of 2 floors of steep stairs to get there. The 1st floor is a bit brighter, but you wish it wasn’t as it makes you realise exactly how horrible this place is. The dance floor is up a step which it seems is far too easy to fall up and down, and is an attempted 70’s style dance floor with flashing lights on the floor, but instead of looking retro it looks cheap, garish and filthy. The bar staff are nice enough but the drinks are overpriced, which seems unfair as the only way to numb the pain is to have a good few of the overpriced drinks. The DJ is a middle aged balding man who probably played the rubbish 70’s and 80’s cheese the first time round, and has been doing the same set ever since. The Reflex seems about 80% full of hen nights and stag do’s. I went on a hen do and spent the entire night being leered over by middle aged men in tacky fancy dress and sweaty shirts. This place is hell, pure and simple. It might be other peoples cup of tea but I’d rather eat my own head than go here again.

I’ve always wanted to know the precise historical, political and social reasons for why the 1980s were so inherently naff in every single way. Seriously, every other decade seemed to follow on from the last in a way that looks reasonable. Except the 80s. For ten years they blighted the history books like a glossy, flashy, tacky, cheap, smug tumour. The world took a while to recover from those years. For reasons that baffle me, Reflex wants to give this period of our chronicles a great big hug and keep it going forever and ever. All the rubbishy pop classics from the era are trotted out in this trashy, garish club; Boy George, Belinda Carlisle, Wham, Cyndi Lauper, Duran Duran ad nauseum. You know the drill. Even writing their names knots my stomach. I can hear their awful wailing in my head already. Make it stop.

Reflex is basically 80s fun in the present day, if you love the Culture club, dodgy sunglasses and a party Reflex is definitely the place for you! They have bargain prices on drinks which really attracts the students crowd. You can expect to find drunken bums attempting to dance around poles, and the«best dancer» usually wins a prize — in my case a funky retro t-shirt. If you’re after more of a chilled night with a few drinks and catching up with friends, I wouldn’t suggest Reflex. The 80s music blares out across the place, unfortunately with no escape. It’s the sort of place I’d recommend ending your evening, having a laugh when you’ve had a few.

If you hadn’t already guessed, I’m a fan of cheesy places. And Reflex is up there with Popworld and The Raz. Now situated in the building that used to be Waterstones, you won’t find any books in here any more. Instead, you can find poles(as in the things girls love to wrap their legs around and swing from, not Polish nationals) and cheap drinks. For example, a double spirit and mixer will cost no more than £2.99, and a bottle will be no more than £2. «Why is it only open 3 nights a week?» I hear you cry. Well, because there are plenty of other places during the week where you can get drinks at similar or better prices, if you really need to budget. Anyway, enough about the drink. The music is steadfastly 80s, although I’m sure I’ve heard a couple of tunes that were bordering on 70s or 90s, but according to the DJ its an 80s track and I’m always too drunk to remember what it was in the morning and check up. Not that I’m that pedantic, of course… ahem. Not forgetting the pole dancing poles, of course, which is a brilliant way of getting the punters to entertain themselves and each other. So many times I’ve heard people announcing they taught themselves to pole dance in Flares or Reflex… bless. I’ve got a feeling I’d ask for my money back if I went to see THAT particular show. Still, like Flares and the 70s, Reflex and the 80s is a safe bet, as it will always be busy after 11pm ish and you can have a cheap and cheesy night out. Just make sure your mates forget their cameras so there’s no photographic evidence of you falling off the pole and bumping your head…

was a bit confused when i visited this place. I have been to a few reflex’s, cos i lurve the 80’s music. When i entered it was contemp music and was really disappointed — UNTIL i discovered there was an upstairs! 80’s 80’s 80’s! yay Drink was reasonable, cocktails for under £3. Nice décor, esp upstairs — discoball mania! Most people upstairs were dressed up, so looked like a bit of a hotspot for hen do’s and that. I will def be returning. Was a really nice atmosphere. def rec’mnd.
