This was the best meal we had in Liverpool! Great atmosphere, excellent vegan options, fantastic beer list and a delicious rosé… All served by the friendliest bartender I’ve ever encountered. A+ for atmosphere.

MelloMello is one of the finest places the city has to offer. Unique, interesting, quirky: just what you want. The vegan and vegetarian food on offer is always delicious and well worth every penny, making it a top place to go just for lunch as well. It’s simple, but I don’t mean that as a negative point at all. There’s a great selection to choose from and I would personally recommend that Portobello burger if it’s still on offer. In the evenings(and sometimes in the day!) it offers gig nights which are always top notch: ‘Free Rock & Roll’ being the pinnacle and THE highlight of the Liverpool music scene. Do not miss a chance to see some of the finest bands from the city(and beyond) — all curated by local legend Pete Bentham. The selection at the bar has grown and grown over the years, to the point where they now have an excellent, ever-changing, guest tap on offer to temp you, as well as the regular stock. It’s a friendly atmosphere, you never feel like you’re going to get any bother by any of the crowd who frequent it. It’s always full of a good selection of like-minded misfits and free-thinkers so expect to have a good time. MelloMello is: Punk Rock, The Bar. DIY. Essential. It carries the torch for individuality, freedom and creativity. Oh and great cakes too.

Mello Mello exactly resembles the kinds of places that I would frequent in San Francisco — and if it was a bit more hipsterly & shiny — it would fit perfectly in Portland. The menu is really nice with several decent options for vegans — my mom & I had a fried portobella mushroom sandwich, which we preceded with some olives & dolmas(aka«stuffed vine leaves» in England). I had a nice stout while my mom discovered Fentimans ginger beer(it’s now an affair verging on addiction). The sandwich came with some potatoes — which were perfectly cooked wedges — the sandwich itself was really well put together, I didn’t expect thin slices of batter fried mushrooms and was very pleasantly surprised. The bartender/server was very friendly, informative and excellent at dealing with questions from multiple customers — he handled everything with grace, aplomb and a great sense of humor. He checked in on all the tables and appeared like he didn’t even break a sweat as he handled orders, delivered orders, cleared tables, talked to customers, checked in vendors, and all sorts of things we saw in just our short visit. He was super nice and really provided great customer service along with excellent food!

Mello Mello is an odd little bar situated not far from Slaters and the Faculty really goes quite unnoticed to be perfectly honest. The décor from the outside looks strange and not very appealing and although things do improve inside this place is far from impressive. They do have live music here and even drinks offers to tempt you inside but I found there was not much which made me want to stay for long. The staff weren’t particularly friendly and it took a while to be able to get served and even then it was not worth the wait. This place had a strange ambience but it was one I didn’t really enjoy which is a shame. There isn’t really a lot I can recommend about this place and there are better nights out to be had in Liverpool. If you’re a student then stick to the hot spots and not Mello Mello.

Mello Mello is a great quirky little venue often inhabited by young bohemians and arty types! It has a great décor and hosts a variety of shows, often focusing on quirky artists and folky musicians. It is also a nice space for freelance promoters to rent out and put on their own shows, and seems to be affiliated with Fact media centre and the infamous Kazimier venue, known as one of Liverpool’s best kept secrets! Mello has put on some fantastic nights with cheap drinks and free buffets which really add to the atmosphere of the venue. They boast many organic alternatives to alcoholic beverages. Which to me is great but somewhat pretentious, they claim that you get less of a hangover drinking the organic alternatives due to lack of additives, but I’ve still woken up with a steaming headache after a night at Mello. I would recommend giving this place a try as it really is a great, friendly little venue, just on the outskirts of louty, unfriendly venues that plague Concert Square.

Mello Mello resembles one of those artfully unkempt places you tend to see people cavorting merrily around on phone adverts. You know the kind, the ones that have the word ‘quirky’ stamped across them in huge block capitals. Well, it’s like that, except endlessly improved by the fact it’s real. With its chessboards, boxes of Ludo and odd selection of herbal teas, the venue stands out as a obscure antidote to town’s usual sloshy gutter-bars. This is the kind of location where you could see pretty much anything. Bands play live, stand-up comedians do their bit and then you noticed the stairs leading upwards to a strange room where beanbags gather you up in a warm hug of tranquility and everything feels one drink away from a love-in. But it gets even curiouser and curiouser. Above this oasis of calm is a room dedicated to thumping dance music. You wouldn’t expect this topsy-turvy dynamic to work but it does and by the time you drag your way out of the rabbit-hole you wonder if the whole thing was a hallucination brought on by watching too many phone adverts. Definitely one to visit.

Well it’s had a bit of a rollercoater has the old Mello Mello. Once the most buzzin pre-club venue in the halcyon days of Cream’s glory era, Mello Mello crashed and burned hard like a clubber’s Tuesady morning once the era of the super club died and the country’s ravers turned their attentions elsewhere — fickle buggers those clubbers. Mello Mello fell into a bit of whole, emerging its head now and again to host the odd exhibition or gig for students and the city’s underground art scene. Finally the venue has somebody’s full attention and it has tentatively been resusitated into a café providing homemade refreshments and snacks — the dainty coffee and tea cups with saucers make it just like havin’ a brew round yer grans. Now that it has gained a liquor licence the good times are here again, Mello Mello is now firmly back at the heart of Liverpool’s bohemian scene — the shabby chic look helps but knowing that many of the staff work here on a voluntary basis I’m not sure the look is deliberate and more a state of affairs for the café. Organic beers and a selection of wines and spirits ensure for an raucous night out as the bar plays host to bands from across the UK and continent on a ragular basis. With The Kazz just around the corner — a venue that is itself making all the right moves in the city’s club scene — Mello Mello is becoming part of a scene with a very cosmopolitan feel to it and is once again the pre-club venue of choice for the alternative nighttime scene.

This place has daily specials on the chalkboard in each of several categories — so there are soup/sandwiches/curry of the day. This is in addition to the staple menu items. I had aubergine & chickpea curry, which came with a khoubz-type flatbread. This was a generous and wholesome plate of food, with plenty of large, juicy chunks of aubergine in a mildly spicy tomato sauce, all for a very reasonable £5.65. I was in there at lunchtime, and whilst there were ten or so other customers(students, a group of forty-something ladies celebrating a birthday), with the well-stocked bar and performance stage, I would expect that this place really comes to life at night. I love the shabby décor, all rubbed down wood, hessian coffee sacks, the old sewing machine/typewriter/radio. Their Christmas tree is made from sheets of newspaper skewered on a central pole — not newspaper-made-into-papier-mâché, sheets of bare newspaper with some spatters of paint! When not engaged in serving food, the servers were cranking out paper-cut decorations, then fearlessly ascending the *very* tall step-ladder to attach said decorations to the ceiling — gotta love the bold, creative, earth goddess-type! And not only are these festive decorations achingly low-carbon, they also blow their commercial counterparts out the water with their sheer virtuouso creativity and high levels of TLC! In the menu, as a preface to all the organic beers and home-cooked goodness, you can read the story behind Mello Mello. It seems that a social enterprise has created and now runs the place, with a donated derelict building having been transformed by the miracle of volunteer input and further donations into the cosy Mello Mello we have today. If I lived in Liverpool, I could easily imagine this place featuring centrally in my life as a venue and place to network with like-minded people. Service-wise, I felt there were some slight rough edges — such as the flatbread could have been warmed. But I feel a bit mean making that kind of comment, as this really is the friendliest, sweetest place and people imaginable — like a living room in a happy, chilled house of friends near L1… and you’re one of the gang! And I’m one of the gang too, so see you there! :-)
