Cool little location that’s almost an overspill between 2 or 3 pubs, lovely rustic feel from the wooden bar and floor and great selection of drinks and cocktails. Was close to the hotel which turned out to be a nice little Bonus for my Liverpool jaunt but will definitely visit again if im ever in the area

Hidden behind a wooden undergrowth of tables at the back of a courtyard is an amiable little pub named after a famous side-loading car ferry, as if you weren’t sick to death of hearing about side-loading car ferries. The Lady of Mann perfectly captures that sense you get on holiday when you find a local tavern you know from the off will be your regular haunt at the end of the week(or ten days if you’re middle-class). Its shaded tranquility, varied beer selection and 70p pickled eggs give the pub a wonderful homeliness that lots of other places fail to accomplish. I used the word ‘tranquility’ there because, even though the voices of drinkers ricochet off the courtyard walls to form a blended, thunderous boom, the pub still manages to feel relaxing. I’m not quite sure how they did that but I admire them greatly for doing it.

Down a little cobbled alley and into a square courtyard…(another beer ‘garden’ that I can put on my list for the next heatwave!) and there lies Lady of Mann. And what a lovely Lady she is! The décor is really pretty and they serve really nice snacks and plates like cheese and biscuits to go with your wine, or pâté, oh and pork pies and chutney! Good for a light luncheon with a beer on a sunny day! I would definitely suggest sitting outside if the weather is worthy enough as it really is pleasant, especially as it is rather cosy closed in between all that old brick work with stacks and stacks of slatted wooden tables. The staff were really nice and a wizened guy at the bar gave us the thumbs up on our choice of beer. Commence chinwag over the immensely superior quality of Czech Budweiser over that American stuff.(FINALLY. I have found a beer I can Actually drink and enjoy!) I shall return Lady of Mann. You have captured my heart.

Before you start making any ‘manlady’ jokes be warned that this pub has a very rich heritage. It’s named after a ship. A big ship. Okay, not a particularly romantic or historically spellbinding ship — the Lady of Mann was in fact a car ferry that operated for 29 years on behalf of the Isle of Man Steam Packet company. She took her maiden voyage in 1976. Not perhaps the most glamorous story, but a worthy story nonetheless. Is she perhaps more glam in pub form? Well let’s see. It’s got stiff competition in the form of The Rigby next door, and often doesn’t hold its own against the pull of real ale and classic features. But you should give it a chance, because the décor’s pretty, the staff are really friendly and pleasant and the location means that you can sit out in the courtyard and watch the world go by — weather permitting, obviously. Hey, Scousers are a brave bunch. Like Geordies. It’s a fairly modern looking place and I enjoy the exposed brickwork along with trendy glass partitions, it’s not overly pretentious and works very nicely, a more wine bar sort of feel. It’s more the kind of pub to include in a little tour than to have as your final destination, but it’s relaxed and the sports on the TV make for the sort of entertainment you’d want in your local boozer. The beer choice can be a little limited, particularly with Rigby’s waving their real ales in your face next door, but what The Lady offers is certainly nice and the open mic nights on Wednesdays and live music on Sundays make for perfect chilled out fun. Include it on your next crawl perhaps, or spend a quiet afternoon there.

Tucked away in the courtyard behind Rigbys this pub has replaced what was formally the Courtyard restaurant and to what aim? It has no particular style of its own and serves the same range of beers as its mother pub Rigbys as well as they may taste. There doesn’t appear to have been a great investment since the change and I believe it to be a victim of the credit crunch however if you dont invest you don’t go forward so we’ll watch and see what happens. A seemingly poor use of another wise nice building with a lovely city centre outside area– shame!
