One of the things visitors see when they first arrive at Liverpool John Lennon Airport is a bronze statue of the great man himself. Stategically positioned on the main walk-away, the statue looks over the main check-in hall and has an imposing presence. Where as the statues in Havana, New York and Spain depict Lennon looking effortlessly cool, leaning against a wall or waiting for someone, this one captures him walking somewhere. His body language suggests he’s on a mission but his face implies he’s deep in thought. Created by local sculptor Tom Murphy, the seven foot statue was unveiled by Lennon’s widow Yoko Ono in Spring 2002 when the airport was renamed after him. Popular with tourists, it’s regularly adorned with flowers and scarves and is frequently used as a photo oppurtunity. In a clever marketing twist, the roof of the check-in area is painted with the Imagine lyric ‘Above us, only sky.’
